Wings of Grace is an aviation ministry that is first and foremost a discipleship and mentoring program for teenagers. Christ Flight Ministries facilitates this program in the state of georgia. Our goal and purpose is to grow and develop teenagers into mature Christians through our 4-year program while providing valuable experiences and training that can be used throughout their life beyond high school. We use aviation as the tool to reinforce the discipline and life lessons taught through our program.
Throughout the program the students will complete community service hours through regular projects we coordinate. For every 6 hours of community service completed the student earns 1 flight training hour. As a result, by the time the student turns 18 years old, they should be ready or almost ready to earn their Private Pilot License.
We enroll students at the ages of 13-14 years old. Our enrollment for a new class of students opens in the fall and summer.
Class meetings are typically on Tuesday nights but can vary between chapters. Classes are typically 1.5 hours long and end no later than 8:30PM. We follow the local Schools Calendar, so when they are off for breaks or holidays we are also off. During class we split the night up into an aviation ground lesson with a pilot and a Bible study lesson. We also have some games and fellowship time as well.
We schedule community service work days on Saturdays once or twice a month. Attendance is not mandatory on any service day, but again this is where the student earns their flight training hours so the more they can attend the more they can bank their time and not risk having to be grounded for not having hours available to fly.
We also schedule fun group outings and events throughout the year to encourage fellowship amongst the group and mentors. Service days, events, and flights will continue through the Summer even though we take a break from our weekly meetings.
The students will fly out of the local airport with our volunteer flight instructors. During their first year, the students will generally fly once every two months. In their second year that will increase to once a month, and then progressively they will fly more often to twice a month, once a week, and so on as they are nearing the end of the program and getting ready for the final checkride.
The enrollment fee for the program is $250 which covers the cost of the training books and their program uniform shirt. After that fee, we only ask for a $75 donation annually per student to help cover the cost of meeting supplies, events, training materials, snacks, etc. This is a voluntary fee.
We do have to reinforce that our program is first and foremost a discipleship and mentoring program for teenagers. While one of our goals is to teach teenagers to become a pilot at a drastically reduced cost to the student, that is not and never will be our primary mission. As such, regular attendance to our weekly meetings for the full 2 hours is necessary to maintain flying privileges. While abscences are of course accepted, habitual abscenses from meetings and events can and will resort in the revocation of flight privileges until a satisfactory attendance level is reestablished.
