JOB/TASK ELEMENT (What is the job process) |
POTENTIAL HAZARD (What may cause injury/illness) |
RISK Level (1,2,3) |
RISK CONTROL (How to control the risk) 1. Eliminate (most effective) 2. Isolate / Substitute 3. Engineering 4. Administration 5. PPE (least effective) |
Post Risk Level (ALARP) |
RESPONSIBLE PERSON (who will implement and monitor the control measures) |
1 |
Risk assess the work environment and the materials being used within the work area to identify Silica Dust hazards |
Inhalation of Silica Dust Risk of causing serious respiratory illness |
1 |
• Complete the risk assessment sheet on page 3 above to identify materials that contain Respirable Crystalline Silica(RCS) producing Silica Dust when drilled or cut • Select the most effective risk controls by circling them on the Risk Assessment on page 3 |

2 |
Preparing work area and set up exclusion zones for working with materials containing RCS Silica Dust |
Other workers or visitors entering work area and being exposed to Silica Dust (RCS) particle contaminates |
1 |
• • Create an exclusion zone with warning signage to stop unauthorised workers and public from being contaminated with RCS silica dust • Erect warning signage in highly visible positions • Make sure that there is adequate lighting and ventilation prior to starting work • Do Not work with silica dust during windy conditions – ensure that the silica dust particles are contained in a compliant manner
|

Supervisor: |
3 |
Induct workers into the safe work process of working with or near RCS Silica Dust
|
Workers unaware of correct procedures while working with or near Silica Dust (RCS)
Risk of causing serious respiratory illness
|
1 |
• • Induct workers into this SWMS and the Risk Assessment (page 3) before starting any work with or near RCS/silica dust • Instruct all workers on the health risks involved in working with/near materials that contain respirable crystalline silica (RCS) producing Silica Dust • Instruct workers on the mandatory RPE that they must wear – as per the RPE requirements in this SWMS
|

Check Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) and plant and equipment |
Inhalation of Silica Dust (RCS) particles during work
Risk of causing serious respiratory illness
|
1 |
•• Wipe out the respirator mask face/mouth piece with clean damp cloth before starting work • Ensure the RPE is in good condition and fit for purpose – not dirty or blocked • Replacement cartridges must be replaced as per the Manufacturer’s instructions • Fit respirator/dust masks in such a way that it does not restrict the effectiveness of the equipment (check facial hair) • Check all cordless electrical equipment and dust removal system – must be fit for purpose • FIT TESTS MUST BE PERFORMED BEFORE USING RPE & 12 MONTHLY AFTER THAT
|

5 |
Drilling / Cutting / Sanding / Grinding materials containing RCS Silica Dust or working within a work environment contaminated with RCS |
Inhalation of Silica Dust (RCS) particles during work
Risk of causing serious respiratory illness
|
1 |
• Use suitable low speed equipment where possible • Battery or electricity powered tools should be fitted with an ‘On-tool’ dust extractor to extract the silica dust • Workers must Wear a minimum half face respirator mask with particulate filter cartridges for RCS silica dust exposure • RPE instruction - Wipe out the mask face/mouth piece with clean damp cloth before use • Replaceable Cartridge – ensure that it is replaced as per the manufacturer recommendations • CARRY OUT AN RPE MASK FIT CHECK before using your mask(check facial hair)

Clean up work area
|
Inhalation of Silica Dust (RCS) particles during work
Risk of causing serious respiratory illness
|
1 |
• Workers must Wear a minimum half face respirator mask with P2 particulate filter cartridges while cleaning up silica dust • Use damp rags to clean plant and equipment • Use a HEPA class ‘H’ Vacuum Cleaner unit to extract dust containing RCS in the work area • Place all contaminated rags, materials and debris in the designated 200UM waste bags
|

7 |
Disposal of Silica Dust (RCS) waste
|
Environmental contamination |
1 |
• Workers must Wear a minimum half face respirator mask with P2 particulate filter cartridges while disposing of silica dust
• Use damp rags to wipe out equipment and areas of concern
• Place all contaminated rags, materials and debris in the designated 200UM waste bags and seal well with duct tape
• Place the bags in the designated skip bins as per the Principal Contactors requirements

*PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE): Workers must be wearing all mandatory PPE before entering the site and wear correct PPE for tasks performed |
