Artists working in two and three-dimensional media are invited to submit images of their work for consideration for the 21st annual Landscapes for Landsake Art Sale & Exhibition. The sale benefits the Agricultural Stewardship Association (ASA), a non-profit land trust conserving farmland and forests in Washington and Rensselaer counties.

The subject is agriculture and forestry: it can be traditional or interpretive and innovative but should draw inspiration from the agricultural landscapes, products, people, and rural life of the Taconic and Upper Hudson regions.

      About ASA

The Agricultural Stewardship Association (ASA) is a non-profit land trust dedicated to the conservation of farmland and working forests in Washington and Rensselaer counties. Maintaining a solid land base helps farming thrive, and thriving farmers provide numerous benefits to the community: a significant boost to the economy, a reliable supply of good food, open space, and beautiful vistas. To date, ASA has assisted landowners in conserving more than 27,000 acres of land on over 156 properties. For more information, visit www.agstewardship.org.

      Virtual & Live Hybrid Event

This year's sale and exhibition will be both virtual and live. All accepted works will be displayed on www.landscapesforlandsake.com and offered for sale. For the live event, a small selection of the artwork will be hung in an exhibition space for in-person viewing. Works hung for the in-person sale will be available on the website after the in-person sale closes. Additional details will be provided with the notification of acceptance. Please anticipate participating in both the virtual and live sale if you are accepted.

Buyers will be able to purchase art directly through the website and at the live event. Buyers will choose to either pick up art at ASA or have it shipped/hand-delivered directly to their home. Works will be displayed on www.landscapesforlandsake.com from October 8 - 31, 2022.

Photographing your work will be more important than ever. Sales of artists from past virtual events whose work was properly photographed proved to be far higher than those who did not.

For the initial application, images are required to be at least 1,000 px wide or tall. If accepted, you will receive additional details on photographic requirements for each piece. Please plan to provide an additional 3-6 photos of each selected piece.

      Application Procedure

To be mindful of our environment, we are asking applicants to complete the application online and submit it electronically along with jpeg images of their work. If you experience technical difficulties, please contact Katie Jilek via email Katie@agstewardship.org to arrange for assitance. Please feel free to refer any other artists you think may be interested in participating to our website, www.agstewardship.org.

General information—Please include your address, telephone and e-mail in your application, a short statement about how our local agricultural landscape informs your work, a short paragraph about yourself, a list of recent exhibitions, etc. Submitted work should be recent within the past 18 months.

Images—Please attach a minimum of six and a maximum of ten images with your application. Only one application per artist will be accepted. Images should be 300 dpi with no less than 1,000 pixels wide or tall and maximum of 2,000 pixels. Images should be uploaded in jpeg format.

Please use the following format to name your images: “artist initials.number.titleofartwork”. So for example KJ01RayofSunshine

Review Process and Criteria for Selection

A panel of jurors will review the submitted materials. The criteria for selection are in two main areas:

      1) the artist’s success in reflecting the goals of farmland conservation, drawing inspiration from agricultural landscapes typical of Washington and Rensselaer counties, New York, and

      2) artistic excellence.

Artists selected by the jury to participate in Landscapes for Landsake will be notified by email/mail during the week of August 8, 2022. After acceptance, the curator or exhibition manager may contact you about selecting works for the exhibition which may or may not be the same works submitted for the consideration process. If selected, the exhibition manager will provide you details on which pieces were selected to be viewed at our in-person event; those will need to be delivered to ASA in late September. All selected works will be made available on the website.

      Proceeds

All of the works chosen for the exhibition will be offered for sale. There has been a growing interest from attendees in commissioned pieces by Landscapes for Landsake artists. Please indicate if you would be willing to provide this service. 50% of proceeds go to the artist and 50% to ASA. Artists may choose to offer a larger percentage to benefit ASA.

      Other Considerations

All works must be properly presented, i.e. in professional quality framing or other means. Framing is the responsibility of the artist. All art must be original work, designed and executed by the accepted artist.

      Liability

ASA reserves the right to photograph works in the exhibition for use in publicity materials. All work selected for this exhibition will be insured for the duration of the exhibition at the net price the artist would receive if the work were sold. All reasonable care will be exercised in the handling of works received. Artists will sign a release for the period of the exhibition. Final information and changes are due by September 1 in your ASA Google Drive (a shared folder, which is assigned in the acceptance letter).

Delivery of Works of Art/Pick-up of Unsold Art

Details will be provided upon acceptance. Please plan to have your paintings available to ASA for the entire months of September and October.

      Promotion

Publicity for the show will include postcards, posters, press releases, all forms of social media, videos, ASA website features, newsletters, newspapers, and radio advertisements.

      Thank you

Thank you for your interest in the Landscapes for Landsake Art Sale & Exhibition. Every artist who applies contributes to the success of the exhibit and to ASA’s mission to conserve our farmland.
