Sportsmen’s Tennis & Enrichment Center (Sportsmen’s) is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to build leaders on the court, in the classroom and in the greater community by providing academic, wellness and social development programs alongside recreational and competitive tennis instruction for youth and adults. Sportsmen’s is committed to improving life opportunities for youth in Boston’s Blue Hill Corridor while welcoming a diverse community from the Greater Boston area. We train, educate and provide competitive and community tennis programs for over 5,000 young people annually, of all races, ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds, and we offer adult leagues and lessons, recreational tennis and competitive tournament play. Our Youth Tennis programs serve K-12 youth during and after school, and in weekend lessons, summer and vacation camps. To learn more about Sportsmen’s, see www.sportsmenstennis.org.
The Brigham and Women’s Center for Community Wellness at Sportsmen’s (CCW) mission is to advance the health and health equity in the under-resourced Boston communities of Dorchester, Mattapan, and Roxbury, along the Blue Hill Corridor. Partnering with residents, we address the social determinants of health, promote and provide resources for health and wellness, and collaborate with other organizations to dismantle the structural barriers and injustices that contribute to health disparities. Our programs center on health and wellness literacy, educational discussions, exercise programs, and healthy cooking. Our response to COVID has included vaccination clinics, testing, and family support. In all of our programs, we emphasize collaboration with other organizations. To learn more about the Center for Community Wellness, see www.bwhccw.org
Our facility, which hosts 14 tennis courts, 5 classrooms, a fitness center, and a clubhouse with showers and lockers, is located on 4 acres near the Dorchester/Mattapan line. Sportsmen’s provides and leverages high quality tennis, academic and social programs to engage with youth, improve their academic outcomes, and open doors of opportunity for college and beyond. Founded in 1961, we were the first non-profit tennis club in the United States formed by and for the African-American community. We maintain a focus on equity and access while welcoming individuals from all walks of life, and we continue to be a leader and innovator in transforming our challenged and under-resourced community.
