    DEPARTMENT - Garden, Farm, and Fruit Produce

    SPECIAL RULES AND JUDGING CRITERIA

    Garden Produce, Fruits and Vegetables
    ● Exhibitors should not wash produce before displaying
    ● Onions and beets should have a 2" stem
    ● Onions should not be peeled
    ● Stems should be removed from all tomatoes
    ● Cabbage should have the outer leaves removed

    Judging Suggestions - 'Based on Consumer Appeal'
    ● Entries should be of uniform size and shape
    ● Entries should be of good color and free of blemishes
    ● Produce should not be over ripe and spoiled
    ● Hay should be green and leafy, free of mold, dust or other foreign objects. It should be cut and cured at the proper stage and have a desirable smell. Enter a flake - please have it tied together

    Judging Criteria for 5x5 Comb Honey will be as follows:
    ● Neatness and uniformity of cut; Absence of liquid honey
    ● Absence of watery caps, uncapped cells and pollen
    ● Cleanliness of the product
    ● Appearance: color, structure, comb thickness

    Judging Criteria of Jar Honey will be as follows:
    ● Absence of crystals
    ● Cleanliness: free of lint, dirt, wax, foam
    ● Container Appearance: Cleanliness and neatness

    BAKED GOODS DEPARTMENT

    Special Rules:
    1 All entries must be labeled as to category, will be covered in plastic provided by the fair; except for decorated cakes and cupcakes.
    2 Exhibitor may place only one entry in each class.
    3 Commercial mixes or commercial pie filling are not to be used in this section.
    4 All exhibits must be the work of the exhibitor.
    5 No meringue, custard, or cream pies will be accepted.
    6 All iced cakes should be double layer except decorated cakes. Other cakes should
    be baked in a tube pan.
    7 Loaf bread should be baked in a standard sized loaf pan.

    Judging Criteria

    Cookies:
    • Uniform in size
    • Even brown
    • No off flavor of fat, soda, etc
    • Texture fine grain - tender, soft, or chewy

    Breads, Rolls, Biscuits:
    • Appearance, good taste
    • Golden color, texture light and tender
    • Pleasing taste

    Frosting and Candy:
    • Moist creamy consistency
    • Fine texture - free from crystals

    Butter Cakes:
    • Texture - tender, breaks easily, grain small & uniform
    • Light, moist and no soggy spots
    • Pleasing flavor, top lightly brown

    Sponge Cakes:
    • Appearance light brown w/ slightly rounded top
    • Texture - loose but tender and velvety, small grained and no doughiness
    • Free from big holes and tunnels

    BEST DECORATED DEPARTMENT

    Best Decorated Scare Crows

    Scare crows MUST be freestanding and completely weather proof. They will be displayed outside on the fairgrounds during fair week. They may be attached to a fence. Scare crows that are not picked up on Fair Sunday will be disposed of.

    This event is only open to youth ages 5 - 19.

    **Suggestions for scare crows could include dressing in a theme, specific style, favorite sports team, school colors...etc.

    Special Rules:

    1. All exhibits must have been made by the exhibitor after July 24, 2022 using standard quart or pint jars with standard approved lids using rings. No exhibits canned in green jars will be accepted. All jars must be sealed.
    2. Lids and jars must be clean.
    3. Any exhibit may be opened for judging.
    4. Jellies and spreads may be in glass or pint jars.
    5. Exhibitor may place place only one entry in each class.

    Judging Suggestions:

    Canned Fruit and Vegetables:

    • Appearance- uniform in size
    • Containers clean
    • Liquid covers product, free from sediments
    • Full pack, not crowded or fancy pack

    EDUCATIONAL EXHIBITS DEPARTMENT

    Chairperson: Kristi Riggleman

    An educational exhibit is an opportunity for an individual to tell the public about a particular project or theme of interest. There should be two parts to the exhibit: a 'show' part and a 'tell' part. The 'show' part includes the items that relate to the theme or project. The 'tell' part is generally a poster(s) that tells about the theme or project.

    Educational Exhibits may:

    1. Teach facts and give information
    2. Show a process, teach how to do something
    3. Promote some phase of club work

    A Good Exhibit has about 60 seconds to:

    1. Arouse the interest of the viewer
    2. Stimulate thought of the viewer
    3. Inspire them to go and do the same

    Special Rules:

    1. Displays must be no more than 24 inches deep, 30 inches wide and 32 inches tall. Display booths will be available on a first-come basis. Remaining exhibits may be placed on tables or risers.
    2. Exhibits must be free standing and constructed of a material heavier than poster board.
    3. Educational exhibits will be judged on the following criteria:

    HOBBIES AND COLLECTIONS

    Special Rules:

    Exhibitors may place only one entry in each class.

    All exhibits entered must not have been previously exhibited and must be the work of the exhibitor during the past year.

    Exhibitors may enter an exhibit in a class of a higher department but may not enter a class in a lower department.

    Models must be firmly put together so they can be handled, since all entries have to be moved around before and after judging.

    Lego exhibits with more than one component need to be presented on a base i.e. shoe box lid or cardboard to ensure the exhibits stay together.

    Due to space limitations, all exhibits are to be no larger than 14x11x11 inches. Nothing larger can be accepted.

    4 Exhibitors may enter an exhibit in a class of a higher department but may not enter a class in a lower department.

    5 Exhibit tags must be secured to clothing, it is recommended tags be 'safety pinned' to garments. Pins will be furnished by the fair.

    6 Please submit pattern envelope and guide sheet with garment.
