  • The 2021-2022 Gary Corcoran Student Prize for Excellence in Reporting on Disability

  • The Gary Corcoran Student Prize for Excellence in Reporting on Disability is the only national journalism contest devoted exclusively to disability coverage by student journalists.

  • Application deadline: August 7, 2022, by 11:59 p.m. PST

    Entries must have been published or aired between July 1, 2021, and July 31, 2022, in either a student or professional publication.  

    The contest is open to anyone who is enrolled in a U.S. or international college or university in 2021/22, while studying for an academic degree. International students may also enter.

    The entrant must have been enrolled as a student at the time of publication or broadcast. Work completed for internships or classes is acceptable if it meets the publication requirement.

    Entries will be accepted from print, broadcast or online-only publications. Entries are accepted from outside of the U.S., although the work submitted must be in English.

    The contest is administered by the National Center on Disability and Journalism, headquartered at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University.

    • Broadcast entries are limited to 10 minutes or less.
    • Print and online entries are limited to a single story or story package (a main story with sidebars of shorter length or a series of no more than four related stories).
  • Describe your entry in 500 words or less. Please address:

    • Impact of your work
    • Any obstacles faced in the reporting
    • Lessons learned in doing this report
    • Any corrections or challenges to accuracy following publication

    TERMS OF AGREEMENT AND CONSENT TO RELEASE

    By submitting contest entry I agree to the following terms:

    • I understand that an award may be revoked if application information is found to be false, misleading or incomplete.
    • Previous winners and winning organizations are eligible to enter the contest. 
    • Unpublished manuscripts and unaired news broadcasts do not qualify. Any work found to be unpublished or unaired or solely produced as a classroom exercise will be disqualified.
    • I give NCDJ permission to publicize winners of the contest and re-publish my story/package on the NCDJ website. The top winner(s) will be invited to Phoenix, Arizona, to receive the award and give presentations.
