Proposals are accepted on a rolling deadline. Classes typically must be planned many months in advance of the start date, so please apply early!
Incomplete applications will not be considered.
THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN PLANNING YOUR CLASS:
- Classes should be no longer than 6 hours on one day and no more than 3 consecutive long days. With longer programs, we find that students lose energy and costs prohibit their participation. Best to leave them wanting more!
- The most successful classes have broad appeal and suit artists of a beginner or intermediate level of experience.
- If you have many ideas and aren't sure what to propose, contact Programs & Events Manager Keri Meyer at kmeyer@huinoeau.com with a few sentence description of your class ideas and she can guide you as to what might be the most successful class.
- Consider the cost and availabilty of supplies! We try to keep classes somewhat affordable for students. A supply fee of $75-$100 is on the higher side. Also, we have very limited art supply stores on Maui, so please consider that most students will need to mail order items in advance of class. In planning your class, any ways that you can help keep supplies accessible and affordable is much appreciated.
- All Hui classes must have a visual art component (ie. they cannot be exclusively literary or performing arts focused)
VISITING (OFF-ISLAND) TEACHING ARTISTS:
Hui No‘eau accepts proposals from artists living on outer islands, the contiguous United States, and abroad! In most cases, we are able to offer accommodations in our studio cottage for the duration of a proposed workshop (or a bit longer depending on cottage availability). Located on-site, the Hui’s Artist Cottage provides basic, yet comfortable accommodations with a full size bed and queen size pull-out sofa bed. The Hui is located on 25 acres in a rural environment. After business and class hours, artists are the only people on site. As a non-profit, Hui No‘eau is not able to provide on-island transportation, a travel stipend, or a food stipend.
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE:
Offered every few years with significant advance planning and a more extensive application process, Artist in Residence programs involve the creation of artwork as well as a significant community engagement component. At this time, the Hui does not provide accommodations or pay artists to stay on Maui while they create their own body of work.
CONDITIONS/MARKETING:
Hui No‘eau considers Teaching Artists as equal partners in promoting classes to potential students. Please note that the Hui reserves the right to change in any way the workshop name, description, instructor biography, etc. for use in its brochure, website, and other promotional tools.
