In 2004 there was a national study of what people want when they get older. This was done by MORI, a national company that carries out public opinion polls. They did this study on behalf of the Commission for Social Care Inspection - now called the Care Quality Commission. Most people under 60 told the researchers that they wanted to stay independent for as long as possible when they get older. This is not surprising: it is likely that you would have said this if the researchers asked your opinion. It tells us, though, that one of the key things that people in social need to understand is that their jobs are about supporting, people to stay as independent as possible.
