🥕 What is a community fridge?
A community fridge is a welcoming space that brings people together to share surplus food, meet up, learn new skills and prevent fresh food from going to waste.
Fridges are open to everyone and anyone can share or take food, including surplus from supermarkets, local food businesses, producers, households and gardens.
Fridges are run by community groups in shared spaces such as schools, community centres, shops and churches.
🥦 How is a community fridge different to other models?
A food bank support those facing food insecurity and typically require a referral.
A pantry is often a paid-for/membership model and may purchase food to sell, rather than focusing solely on surplus. (Though there are exceptions!)
🍅 ...And how about the Community Fridge Network (CFN)?
The CFN, launched by Hubbub in 2014, brings together UK groups running community fridges. It’s a space to:
- Share knowledge and skills
- Ask questions and support each other
- Access free, comprehensive guidance on setting up and running your fridge - from food safety to volunteer management
- Download printable posters to inform visitors and brighten your fridge space
