• PVIS Cotillion 2022-2023

    Registration Deadline: August 31, 2022

PVIS Cotillion, a popular intermediate school activity and tradition on the PV Peninsula, is associated with the PVIS Booster Club, a parent-sponsored organization dedicated to enriching the PVIS student experience.  We encourage participation in the Booster Club and offer a lower fee to students who are Booster Club members (Sea King donation level or higher).

The purpose of Cotillion is to provide your child with instruction in basic dance steps and social graces.  Eight dances are held, typically on Friday evenings, from September to April.  The year culminates with a Mother/Son - Father/Daughter dance to which one parent is invited (mother and son or father and daughter).

Each dance is a semi-formal or themed dance with music, decorations, and refreshments.

  • There will also be a mandatory student and parent orientation, once we know the schedule, for all 6th grade and new Cotillion members. This may be a Zoom session or in the MPR.

We need parent volunteers to help set-up/decorate and chaperone; Sign-up Genius forms will be emailed to solicit your participation once the schedule is set.  If we do not have enough chaperones, we may need to cancel dances for safety reasons. Parent volunteer hours are a plus for children who apply to The Palos Verdes Assembly in high school.

Cotillion prepares students to participate in PV Assembly at the high school level.  PV Assembly is a co-ed program of community service, in addition to ballroom dancing and etiquette, culminating in a senior presentation ball.  Acceptance into Assembly is affected by attendance in Cotillion during all three years of middle school.

  • Cotillion membership is limited in class size for safety, and effort is made to maintain an even boy/girl ratio. Early application submittal is strongly recommended for admission into Cotillion. Applications will be prioritized based on the date that fully completed applications and full payment are received, with attention to maintaining an even boy/girl ratio. It is no longer necessary to submit your application with a partner.

The last date to submit a Cotillion application is August 31, 2022.

A confirmation email will be sent to those accepted into Cotillion, followed by a formal invitation.

    Membership Cost:

$125 for PVIS Booster Club Member* (to be verified)

    $160 for non-Booster Club Members

    * To qualify for Booster Club Member discount, student/family must be a Sea King Booster level member or higher. Booster Club memberships can be purchased during online registration, but families can apply the discount now.

  • Questions: Contact Carolyn Carpenter at PVISCotillion@gmail.com

  • PVIS Cotillion Code of Participation

The Cotillion Board has adopted the following policies and participation code. Parents and members are asked to cooperate in order that Cotillion continue to be a positive and successful experience for all.

Students:  Students are expected to be respectful, use good manners, and listen (not talk) during instruction.  NO electronics or gum allowed.  Dances start promptly.  Attendance at all dances is expected.  If a student is 20 minutes late or leaves more than 20 minutes early, it counts as an absence.  If a student will not attend a dance, please e-mail the Cotillion Chair at PVISCotillion@gmail.com one week in advance so we have time to balance the boy/girl ratio with Assembly (high school) volunteers and manage our refreshment count.

Absences: After missing a dance, the student must send in a hand written note of regret to PVIS Cotillion, P.O. Box 981, PVE, CA 90274 before the next dance to remain in good standing. Please indicate student grade on the note.

Parents:  To help Cotillion run smoothly, parent participation is encouraged. Please ensure your student is following the dress code.  Parents will be contacted if a participant is ill, is unmanageable, violates the dress code, or displays inappropriate behavior.  Students will not be permitted to leave a dance unless accompanied by a chaperone or parent.  Students must be picked up on time at the end of each dance in front of the MPR.  Students are NOT allowed to walk home from Cotillion.

Out of consideration for the students, parents are not allowed to stay and watch unless they are scheduled to chaperone. All parents are invited to attend the April dance.  Please take photos at home before the dance or park in the teacher’s lot (not the drop off zone) and walk up to photograph groups. We have to process 200 children arriving in cars in a very short time span.

    Girls Dress Code:

SEMI-FORMAL: Must wear party/dinner dresses, short white gloves, and appropriate dress shoes (heels no more than 3 inches high, must have a back strap).  Dress length should be modest (e.g., 2 inches or less above knee).  Girls are raising their arms and twirling, thus modest attire is expected and will be enforced.  NO strapless, halter, single strap, mid-riff showing, or bare back/cut-out dresses.  NO miniskirts.  NO leggings.  NO revealing necklines or visible undergarments (e.g., straps).

Gloves are provided complimentary to first-time members (girls only) at the first dance. Additional pairs are available for purchase for $5.00.

THEME DANCES: Dress appropriately for the theme (legs must be covered down to the knee, no bare backs or mid-riffs), or wear semi-formal dress. Pants, denim and athletic shoes are OK at theme dance only, provided they are part of the student's costume. No ripped/torn jeans/shorts. No jeans or sneakers without a theme-based costume.  No leggings to be worn alone as pants. Gloves are not needed. NO mules or flip flops ever. If a student is not in costume, semi-formal attire is required.

    Boys Dress Code:

SEMI-FORMAL: Must wear suit or sport coat, dress shirt (tucked in), dress slacks, tie, dark socks, and hard-sole dress shoes.  NO athletic shoes or tennis shoes.

THEME DANCES: Shirt and pants appropriate for the theme, or sport shirt and long pants, or semi-formal attire. Denim and athletic shoes OK at theme dance only, provided they are part of the student's costume. No ripped/torn jeans. No jeans or sneakers without a theme-based costume.  NO cutoff shorts.  NO sleeveless, collarless or torn shirts. NO flip flops ever.  If a student is not in costume, semi-formal attire is required.

Refunds: Once a student is accepted into Cotillion, there are no refunds.

Cotillion Board:  The Cotillion Board reserves the right to dismiss any student who repeatedly disrupts instruction or violates the dress code.  Parents will be called if the student’s behavior becomes a problem.

Additional Cotillion details are available on the PVIS website Cotillion link.  Please go to the PVIS website and review these documents with your child.
