Description:
Edgar Payne was one of the great American landscape painters, who understood the importance of average-value massed shapes in composing a picture. This basic ability to see a composition in Nature and arrange it in two dimensions, rather than merely attempting to copy a scene in all its chaotic detail, is the focus of Payne's classic book, The Composition of Outdoor Painting.
In this workshop, Nelia will guide students through the principles and exercises in Payne's book, emphasizing the importance of thumbnail sketches and value studies to help you learn to see and plan a composition before you try to paint it.
