• Teaching Assistant Application

  • Dancers currently enrolled at Studio H Dance Company, ages 12 and older, have the opportunity to apply for the Teaching Assistant Program. This program is designated to give students experience towards becoming trained dance instructors and mature leaders. Schedules are determined by the the Director.

     

    The opportunity to serve as a Teaching Assistant is a valuable learning experience and may result in future work references and teaching opportunities.

     

    Teaching Assistants represent Studio H Dance Company and must be exemplary students and volunteers. Misconduct, poor behavior, poor sportsmanship, disprespect of fellow dancers/teachers in the classroom or at Studio H events will result in immediate terminition of position. 

     

    Teaching Assistants must begin the program as a volunteer. Limited paid positions are available for previous Volunteer Teaching Assistants who are 16 or older and have at least two years of experience.

     

    All Teaching Assistants will be evaluated and assessed by the instructor and SHDC staff periodically. Schedules are subject to change throughout the season based on class enrollment.

  • Teaching Assistant Expectations

     

    • Arrive 10-15 minutes before the scheduled class time
    • Show enthusiasm, without being disruptive
    • Learn dancer's names and work to connect with students
    • Demonstrate proper technique, etiquette, and behavior in classroom
    • Dress appropriately and follow SHDC dress code for each class
    • Must be respectful, proactive, and helpful in all tasks
    • Give corrections with confidence and offer corrections in a positive way
    • Notify Instructor and Director of tardiness and absences from any Teaching Assistant duties
      • Absence policy refers to excused or unexcused absences
      • Teaching Assistants could be dismissed from program if maximun absences is exceeded
  • Volunteer Yr. 1 Responsibilities:

    • Take attendance
    • Assist students individually while instructor teaches entire class
    • Pass out stickers
    • Demonstrate technique
    • Assist dancers with shoe changes- if needed
    • Bring students to/from the restroom
    • Watch for potential safety hazards (untied shoelaces, poor spacial awareness, etc.)
    • Assist with keeping students on task and focused
    • Offer encouragement to students during class
    • Be a positive and helpful role model
    • Handout props
    • Assist with behavior/classroom control
    • Assist and demonstrate warm-ups
    • Demonstrate across-the-floor exercises

     

    Volunteer Yr. 2-4 Responsibilities:

    • All Volunteer Year 1 responsibilities
    • Correct behavior and classroom misconduct
    • Lead warm-ups
    • Give technique and choreography corrections
    • Lead accross-the-floor exercises

     

    Volunteer Yr. 5 Responsibilities:

    • All Volunteer Year 1 responsibilities
    • All Volunteer Year 2 responsibilities
    • Run 1 class with Instructor supervision

     

    Paid Assistant Responsibilities:

    • All Volunteer responsibilities
    • Assist with lesson plans
    • Occassionally chorerograph

    • Video Dance Audition: prepare a video clip of a 30-90 second self-choreographed dance piece demonstrating proficient skills in at least one dance class discipline the dancer would feel comforatble assisting
