• Louisiana Bat Volunteering

Thank you for your willingness to participate in Louisiana Bat Monitoring! This citizen science initiative allows us to monitor bat populations throughout the state and would not be possible without your help. For more information, please contact Nikki Anderson: ldwfwildifehealth@wlf.la.gov, 225-765-5030
  • Bats are important for pest control, seed dispersal, and pollination world-wide. White-nose syndrome, caused by a fungus, is responsible for more than 6 million bat deaths in the United States since its discovery in 2006. The fungus was detected for the first time in Louisiana in March 2021.  With the fungus moving into the state it is critically important we monitor bat populations statewide.

  • Mobile Acoustic Routes

Bat acoustic rotes are predetermined and driven during the Winter (November through March) and Summer (May through July). Routes begin 45 minutes after sunset, are approximately 15 miles in length, and are driven at 20 mph. A singe route is driven twice within a seven day period.

  • Bat House Monitoring

For bat house monitoring, we ask that you complete a bat house questionnaire. If you are willing to count bats, we would love for you to provide information on one or two counts per year.

  • Education and Outreach

Do you love bats? Do you enjoy talking to people? If you answered yes, you could help with outreach and education through outdoor events, classroom demonstrations, public talks, or anything else you are comfortable with. We will provide everything you need!

  • Anything Else

Please let us know if you know the location of a colony you would like to share with us, have general questions about bats, would like to volunteer in some other way, or anything else.
