Behavior Policy
Our top priority is to maintain a fun, safe learning environment for all children when participating in Pre-K.
We Rock the Spectrum Asheville is a full inclusion gym for ALL kids of ALL abilities. This includes all behaviors. Our coaches and teachers understand that all kids exhibit different behaviors for different reasons. With this being said, we want to ensure that ALL children are safe during their days at PreK. If we observe children exhibiting physically aggressive** behaviors, parents will be notified immediately. ABC (antecedent, behavior, consequence) data notes will be provided to parents on all aggressive behaviors to provide a comprehensive analysis of the situation. If the behavior occurs towards others or self more than 3 times, parents will need to provide a 1:1 assistant for their child for the class. This is to ensure that all children remain safe as well as that behaviors can be managed appropriately. **Aggression is the act or attempted act of intentionally causing harm to another. This may or may not include hitting, kicking, biting, shoving, pinching, or pulling hair. Aggression may or may not leave a visible mark on another individual. It is up to Mrs. Vanessa what constitutes as aggression.
Our team will attempt to our utmost ability to successfully assist your child in communicating their needs and emotions appropriately. We practice de-escalation techniques to defuse meltdowns and have a hands-off approach if at all possible.
Due to the nature of our class, it is important for We Rock the Spectrum-Asheville/Let Children Lead Team Members to remain knowledgeable in ethical, research-based crisis management procedures in the event of a crisis. A crisis is defined as continuous aggressive, self-injurious, or destructive behaviors that pose an immediate safety issue for the individual and those around them. We Rock the Spectrum-Asheville has taken the nature of our class and incorporated various prevention strategies into our curriculum to decrease the likelihood of these behaviors to occur, although recognizing these behaviors could occur during any of the activities throughout the day.
In the event my child begins to engage in continuous, high-magnitude aggressions, self-injury, or property destruction while under the supervision of We Rock the Spectrum Asheville/Let Children Lead Team Members, I allow team members to utilize procedures to maintain a safe teaching environment for my child and those around them. All rooms have recording cameras to ensure the safety of our students and staff. Some procedures include (but are not limited to):
Peeling Techniques (Hair & Clothing Removal if grabbed)
Transportation Procedures (Gently remove from environment to a safe space)
Protective barrier (use of a mat as a barrier between the child and other's bodies to prevent harm to others. This mat will not be held against the child or hold the child in a restricted area.)
Redirection of the child's hands to their own body and not on another's body.
Documentation and immediate notification will be provided to Parents/Guardians after de-escalation of the crisis has been met.
Biting/Pushing/Hitting Policy
Unfortunately, at some time during the year your child may come home with injuries from another student on his/her body. Biting, hitting and pushing can be a scary incident and every effort is made by teachers to watch children carefully so that it does not occur. However, when young children do not have verbal skills necessary to communicate their feelings, they often lash out at the nearest person, whether that person is the cause of the frustration or not. Fortunately, this should be a short, passing phase and only warrants concern if it continues.
Biting, hitting and pushing are not unexpected behaviors for toddlers. Some children and many toddlers communicate through this behavior. However, this can be harmful to other children and to staff. This policy has been developed with both of these ideas in mind. As a preschool, we understand that these behaviors, unfortunately, are a part of a preschool setting. Our goal is to help identify what is causing the incident and resolve these issues. If the issue cannot be resolved, this policy serves to protect the children that are injured. If an incident occurs, state regulations require that the parent of both children be contacted. Names of the children are not shared with either parent.
When biting/pushing/hitting does occur:
Our staff strongly disapproves of biting/pushing/hitting. The staff’s job is to keep the children safe and help a child that harms another learn different, more appropriate behavior. We do not use techniques to alarm, hurt, or frighten children.
For the child that was injured:
1. First aid is given to the injury. Bites/scratches are cleaned with soap and water. If the skin is broken, it is covered with a bandage.
2. Parents are notified via the “Incident Report” form to document the incident.
For the child that bit/pushed/hit:
1. The teacher will firmly tell the child, using the appropriate term: “No biting/hitting/pushing. Ouch! That hurts! We do not bite/hit/push.” And ask them to check in with the child who was hurt.
2. The teacher will explain in an age and developmentally appropriate manner, how the other child may feel and what other ways there are to deal with their frustration.
3. The parents are notified. An “Incident Report” is filled out documenting the incident via Brightwheel.
Moving forward:
The child will be shadowed to help prevent any biting/pushing/hitting incidents. The child will be observed by the teachers to determine what is causing the child to bite/hit/push (teething, communication, frustration, etc.) A chewy necklace will be required for us to redirect your child to during these incidents. We will provide the chewy necklace and you will be charged via Brightwheel. They will be required to wear it during their time at pre-k. The child will be given positive attention and approval for positive behavior.
When biting/pushing/hitting continues:
1. If a child inflicts 2 bites/pushes/hits in a one week period (5 days of school attendance) in which the skin of another child or staff member is broken or bruised or the bite leaves a significant mark, a conference will be held with the parents to discuss the child’s behavior and how the behavior may be modified.
2. If the child again inflicts 2 bites/pushes/hits in a one week period (5 days of school attendance) in which the skin of another child or staff member is broken or bruised or the bite leaves a significant mark, the child will be asked to take a one week break from the school. Parents will still be required to pay for this time period.
3. If the child again inflicts 2 bites/pushes/hits in a one week period (5 days of school attendance) in which the skin of another child or staff member is broken or bruised or the bite leaves a significant mark, the parents will be asked to provide a one-one assistant. This can be a parent, family member, family friend or therapist. All adults will need to be authorized before attending. Until the assistant is available, parents must make other day care arrangements.
If a child, who has been through step 1 and 2 and then goes 3 weeks (15 days of school attendance) without biting/pushes, we will go back to step one if the child bites/pushes/hits again.
If a child bites/pushes/hits twice in a 1 hour period, or the injury is deemed serious, the child will be required to be picked up from preschool for the remainder of the day.
If a child aged 4 or older bites more than one time, they will immediately require a one-one assistant. Until the assistant is available, parents must make other day care arrangements.
