• ESWO Purple Nation Summer Camp

Our summer camp is for children with epilepsy and their siblings between the ages of 4-12. We invite you to indicate your intent to register for camp in the summer. We have planned dates for two weeks over the summer. The first is from July 10th to July 14th, and the second week is from August 14th to August 18th. Campers can be dropped off at or after 9am and are expected to be picked up by 4pm. We will be at the South London Neighbourhood Community Center for the first two days of each week of camp to play in the gymnasium, splash pad, playground, and have indoor activities, then we are expecting we will spend two days at Graham Family EcoPark, and finish with a day at Storybook Gardens on Fridays (to be confirmed). More details will follow once the latter two locations have been confirmed.
  • Camp Cost

The cost of camp is $25/day for the first camper and includes an ESWO camp t-shirt for the camper. A second camper from the same family is able to attend at a cost of $10/day and will also receive a t-shirt. If families would like to have their child attend camp but feel that they cannot afford the cost, please connect with Holly O'Neill, Director of Client Services, as subsidy options may be available.
  • Additional Fees: Late Pick Up

It is important for children and staff that all campers are picked up by 4pm as staff will be expected to stay late with the child who isn't picked up at this time and will incur extra staffing costs as the child cannot be left alone. The first time that a child is late being picked up will be thought of as an opportunity to educate and remind of the pick up time as we recognize that things come up and it may be unavoidable to pick up late. The second time a child is picked up late, families may be charged a late fee of $5 for every 10 minutes they are late at the discretion of ESWO staff. If a parent/caregiver is consistently late (3 or more times) picking up a child, staff may have a discussion about the feasibility of the camper staying in the program.
  • Camp Ratios and Inclusion

Our ratio for camp will be 1 staff to 8 children. One-on-one support may be possible from volunteers for children who need intermittent assistance for things like transitions, changing shoes, or needing more time to join activities due to mobility challenges. However, if you feel that your child needs more intensive support, please discuss this with Holly O'Neill, Director of Client Services (holly@epilepsyswo.ca) prior to registering to consider strategies and solutions for a positive camp experience. Families are welcome to bring their own support person at their cost. The support worker will need to have a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check.
  • What to Expect from Camp

ESWO strives to provide a fun and enjoyable time at camp. We will be offering theme days, different crafts, indoor and outdoor games, individual and group activities. We expect that much of our day will be spent outside, so please prepare your child for the weather each day and send extra clothing, just in case. Each camper will need a waterbottle, lunch, sunscreen, hats, and a backpack for their supplies. We ask that you do not send your child to camp with toys, money, electronics, or sharp objects. Please label all belongings - ESWO cannot be held responsible for missing, lost, or damaged items. If we come across lost items, we will hold these in lost and found until the end of the last day of camp for retrieval and then later donate them to a charitable organiziation if not claimed. As campers will likely need to bring their backpacks with them as we move through different activities, please ensure that the bag isn't too heavy for them to carry. We also request that lunches are brought in reusable containers, rather than disposable wrappers to avoid leaving waste behind.
  • Child Guidance Policy

ESWO staff and volunteers are committed to providing a positive and enjoyable camp experience. We hope to support children in developing their social skills, problem solving skills, and emotional regulation, and to feel confident in their abilities. Each child will be addressed with respect and dignity, in a way that respects their self-esteem. To this end, we will respond to children's behaviours with positive guidance and inappropriate behaviours will be dealt with on an individual, case by case basis. This could include setting limits, noticing and encouraging behaviours we would like to see continue, helping children to see the natural consequences of their actions, implementing logical consequences, supporting children through conflict resolution, offering choices, and redirecting to a different activity. Some behaviours that are not causing harm to people or property may be safely ignored to focus instead on positive behaviours. Staff and volunteers will also model behaviour that they want to see, and will actively plan the environment to avoid conflict, inappropriate behaviour, and monitor children at all times to try to anticipate arising challenges. At no time will corporal punishment or punitive punishment ever be used on a child.
  • Camp Rules

All campers are expected to keep their hands to themselves and off of other people and their belongings, as well as to not intentionally damage property. Campers are expected to stay with their counsellor and group at all times. Campers are expected to use appropriate language while at camp (i.e. no swearing, hurtful or explicit language). Other rules may be added as needed, but these are the basic expectations for a successful camp experience for all involved. If these rules are broken by campers, it will be discussed with the child and then with the parent at the end of the day. Repeated incidents may need to result in the removal of the child from camp to ensure safety for all.

  • Administration of Medication Policy
If a child requires medication (both prescription or over the counter) to be administered during programming, an Administration of Medication Form must be completed by the parent/guardian and must be in the child’s file. Parents / caregivers are to send the medication in the original prescription bottle that is labelled with the child’s name, medication name, and required dosage.

Parents/caregivers are responsible to notify of any medication changes. Medication should be given directly to the camp staff at the beginning of the day - NOT to a volunteer - and will be returned to the parent or caregiver at pick up. Staff is not permitted to administer medications rectally. In case of emergency, EMS will be contacted and parents/caregivers will be called. Under no circumstances are volunteers to administer medication.
