For 9 consecutive weeks, COTR will be in 9 different locations in New Haven to declare God’s word over the city!
For many, the 9 locations may seem random, but not for Lead Pastor Jason Goubourn of Church on the Rock-New Haven. The locations have significant meaning which goes back to the late 1600’s.
In 1638, John Davenport along with Thomas Hooker and John Cotton set out with a group of Christians to establish what is now New Haven. Davenport desired to create a colony that pledged themselves to direct all their affairs according to the scriptures of the bible, even down to the design. Founders designed the town itself, with its Nine Squares, to reflect the plan of the encampment of the Israelites in the wilderness, the Temple of Solomon, and the New Jerusalem as described by John in the book of Revelation. The design closely followed descriptions of Solomon’s Temple found in the Bible, even in its size. “The blocks of New Haven are roughly 500 cubits on a side,” or 800 feet. (Ezekiel 42:15-20)
They intended the physical form of the town to inspire its inhabitants to lead godly lives. Source: connecticuthistory.com. Davenport’s ideas of Christianity did much to shape colony of New Haven. His desire was to establish a place both architecturally designed and governed by Christian principles based on sound doctrine and scripture.
It is with that heart that COTR will pray and declare the word of God in each of the 9 squares of the City of New Haven. All are welcome to join!
COTR… ALL IN!!
