  • Background

  • The Crime Prevention through Safer Streets Advisory Committee (Committee) is an 11-member board appointed by the Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Public Safety. The Committee acts in an advisory capacity to the Department and the Division of Criminal Justice.

    The purpose of the Committee is to develop the grant criteria for the Crime Prevention through Safer Streets Grant Program which is designed to assist local governmental agencies with identifying areas where crime is prevalent. After identifying such areas, local governmental agencies can apply for grant funding for improvements designed to create safer streets.  The Committee will review these applications and make funding recommendations.

    The Committee consists of the following representatives:

    • Law Enforcement (2 positions)
    • Law Enforcement Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion (EDI) Expert
    • Local Official representing an urban area 
    • Local Official representing a rural area
    • Crime Prevention Expert
    • Community Organization (3 positions)
    • Urban or Transportation Planning Expert
    • Architect with experience in crime prevention through environmental design

    Some positions have been filled.

  • Please review the duties of the Committee: 

    • To recommend grant program criteria that allow the Department of Public Safety Division of Criminal Justice and Local Governments to evaluate and design safer streets and neighborhood models that discourage crime, revitalize community image, and establish place-specific crime prevention strategies that account for geographic, cultural, economic, and social characteristics of the target areas
    • To review applications for grants for safer streets and make recommendations to the Department of Public Safety Division of Criminal Justice which grant applications to approve and the amount of each grant
