We are very excited to offer this class to you so that you can learn how to process your own chicken. The course will be very hands on as we guide you through the processing of your very own chicken to take home. We will provide a small lunch after the class. During this time we will discuss the topics below.
The cost of the class will be $80 per participant and will include the following skills and topics:
Topics:
• Choosing chicks
• Brooding options
• Feed rations, options, and schedules
• Disease and injury
• How, when, and why of pasture raising
• Predator issues
• Humane slaughter; butchering; packaging
• Regulations
Skills taught:
• Humane slaughter (killing)
• Scalding
• Plucking
• Eviscerating
• Butchering (break-down) a chicken
• Packaging
**WHAT TO WEAR/BRING**
- Please wear something comfortable and prepare for the weather. We do provide some shade and cover.
- Wear clothes that you don't mind getting dirty and or a little wet. (We will provide disposable aprons)
- For bio-security reasons, please clean and disinfect the bottoms of your shoes the night before. Rubber boots are generally the easiest on the farm, but not required.
- Bring something to drink during your day. We will have bottled water.
- Bring a cooler with some ice or something to bring your processed chicken home.
- Bring a notepad/pen if desired for notes.
