Dear Netflix,
Storylines about organ donation have the power to save lives, or cost them.
We in the organ, eye and tissue donation community in the United States ask that Netflix work with us to help us save lives.
Netflix has produced or distributed three series with problematic organ donation storylines: The Marked Heart, Chambers and Squid Game. All three perpetuate fears and misconceptions of organ donation, which could be costing lives.
According to research:
- People believe what they see on scripted organ donation storylines
- This is because donation is so rare so people don’t have a personal experience to counter what they see
- After watching fear-based storylines people are less likely to register as donors
Netflix has approved a Season Two for The Marked Heart.
We are asking for Netflix and show creator Leonardo Padrón to have a conversation with leaders in the organ, eye and tissue donation community before season two is written or filmed.
