  • This is the web-based State TA request form

    About filling out this form:

This form can be completed on a mobile device or computer. CAC signatures are NOT allowed. Use of a touch-screen device, electronic pen/pencil or an external signature device is recommended in order to electronically sign the required pages of this form.

State TA is available only to non-AGR members of the Texas Army National Guard or the Texas Air National Guard, or members of the Texas State Guard. Only members of these 3 components should submit this application form to request State TA. Membership eligibility will be verified during the processing of your request for aid.

    • If you are in any other branch or component, including the Army Reserves and Air Force Reserves, you are NOT eligible to receive State TA. It is recommended that you look into the Federal benefits that may be available to you, such as Federal TA or GI Bill.

This application will ask for very minimal college related information. School documents are NOT required when filling out this form. Certain documents will be requested from you later, after the semester begins.

It takes an average of 10-15 minutes to complete this form.

    About the program:

State TA is designed as a REIMBURSEMENT program. Your school may require you to pay your balance in full according to their payment schedule. It is highly recommended that you use all other financial aid resources available to you which may help pay your tuition at the beginning of the school term. Be aware that State TA can award reimbursement for only the charges not paid by grants and scholarships.

If you are approved for a State TA award, your award payment will be sent to your school after the end of each semester, Fall and Spring only (Summer classes are not paid). Your school may then issue you a refund or apply the award funds to existing charges on your school account.

Our office will keep you posted on the progress of your request by sending multiple emails throughout each semester. It is important that you monitor your inbox and promptly reply when information is requested from you.

State TA - Request for One or Both Semesters
  • Most applicants that apply early do request State TA for both terms of the school year. However, for administrative reasons a separate application for each semester may be required. Answer the following questions to help determine if your request should count for the whole year or just one semester.

  • Since you marked that you will be working on the same degree for the whole school year and attend the same college for the whole year, this submission can count for both Fall and Spring terms. In the field below, select the option for "Both Fall and Spring".

  • You can submit a request for only the Fall semester. In the field below, select the option for "Fall ONLY".

  • You can submit a request for EITHER the Fall OR Spring semester only. In the field below, select the option for "Fall ONLY" or "Spring ONLY".

  • You are completing this form after the Fall deadline. You can request State TA for Spring term classes only. In the field below check the option for "Spring ONLY".

  • NOTE: If you are attending 2 different colleges at the same time during this school year and all your classes are applied toward earning one degree, then you should submit 2 application forms, one for each college. Be aware that the maximum award you can receive is 12 credit hours of tuition and fees. The 12 credits may be divided between 2 different colleges.

  • NOTE: You will need to submit a separate application form for the Spring semester IF:

    • you are attending one school for the Fall, but a different school for the Spring, or
    • you finish one degree in the Fall and begin a new degree in the Spring, even if you don't change to a different college.

For administrative purposes we will need a new application form before the Spring term deadline that will count for the Spring semester only.

  • The State Tuition Assistance program is available ONLY to members of the Texas National Guard or Texas State Guard. As a member of a Federal Reserve component (US Army Reserves, US Air Force Reserves, etc.) or a member of any regular Active Duty component (Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines), you unfortunately do NOT qualify to use this benefit program.

Although you do not qualify to use State TA, there are other programs that are likely available to you that will help pay for college tuition. Most Service Members have access to Federal Tuition Assistance and/or GI Bill benefits. Contact your supporting education office or unit education personnel to find out what benefits may be available to you.

  • Members of the Texas Air National Guard must also identify the Wing that you fall under. All Texas Air Guard units fall under one of the three Wings listed here.

  • Provide at least one reliable email address

Messages regarding your State TA request will be emailed to you throughout the semester. Your "preferred" email address is the main method we will use to contact you.
  • Texas State Guard Email Guidance:

You indicated that you are a member of the Texas State Guard (TXSG). Please verify your membership by providing your TXSG email address as either the preferred or secondary email address. Your TXSG address will end with ".tx.us".

If you do not have an assigned email ending in ".tx.us", you may have incorrectly chosen TXSG membership. Please scroll back up now and correct your selection.

Keep in mind that the preferred address is what we will use as the primary way to contact you. It should be easily accessible to you on a regular basis.

  • You must provide a date for this question.

There is a State TA eligibility rule that requires you to continue to serve through the end of the semester in order to receive tuition assistance. The ETS/MRD date is used to confirm your intent and/or requirement to satisfy this eligibility rule.

    • If you are not sure of your exact ETS/MRD date, it is ok to give an approximate date.
    • If you do not have an assigned ETS/MRD date, use {academicYear}, which represents your intent to serve through the end of the school year.

  • Confirm Your Selection !!

Select "Pre-requisites for a graduate degree"

    ONLY IF

you have already earned a bachelor degree.

If you do NOT have a bachelor's degree yet,

then select either "Associate" or "Bachelor",

whichever one you will earn next.

  • It is a common mistake to select the wrong degree level !!!

You selected a certificate program as your Degree Level !!!

You should select a certificate level ONLY IF you have already earned a bachelor's degree and are now registered in a certificate program.

If you have NOT earned a bachelor's degree AND your current classes DO count toward an associate's or bachelor's degree, you should select either an associate's or bachelor's as your degree level.

ADDITIONAL NOTE: Not all certificate programs will qualify for State TA. If you are registered in an undergraduate or graduate certificate program, the courses should qualify for college credit. If you will not earn college credit for completing these courses, then the certificate program may not qualify for State TA funding.

Continue submitting this application form. Later in the review process, we will review the qualifying criteria for the program in order to determine if the program is fully eligible for a State TA award. You will be notified once eligibility is determined.

  • Selecting Your Education Level

Most applicants are working on an associate's degree, bachelor's degree, or master's degree. Select the one that you will be earning next. This is your current degree level.

    • If you are registered ONLY at a community college or Jr. college and you have not declared a major or you have been assigned to an associate's level program, select Associate's level, even if you plan to transfer out before earning your associate's degree.
    • If you are registered at BOTH a community college and at a university where you will earn your bachelor's degree, select Bachelor's level
    • Select the Master's degree level ONLY IF you have already earned your bachelor's degree.
  • If you are earning credits to be transferred toward a degree at a different school

    • If you are currently registered in 2 colleges working on one degree, select the degree level that you will earn, probably a bachelor's degree.
    • If you are completing prerequisites required for a graduate degree program, select "Prerequisites for Graduate" as the level.

You may be asked to provide documentation supporting your situation, like a degree plan or letter from your academic advisor.

  • If you answer "Yes" to any of the following questions, you will be asked to provide the documentation indicated under each question as soon as it is available to you. Failure to disclose your financial aid information may be grounds for denial of an award.

If you are unsure about your eligibility for any of the following benefits, contact our office to have a counselor review your eligibility.

    • Post 9-11 GI Bill requires completing a deployment or other qualifying Active Duty. If you haven't completed this type of service, then you do not qualify to use Post 9-11 GI Bill.
    • You must have some Active Duty time OTHER THAN  your initial training to qualify for Hazlewood. Weekend drills and annual training do NOT qualify for this benefit.
    • If you do qualify, your Hazlewood benefits will likely take care of all the qualifying charges. This means you will likely NOT qualify for State TA.
    • We will review your information later in our process to confirm if you have an amount that qualifies for a State TA award.
  • Financial Assistance Other Than State TA

    • FTA is a Dept. of Defense aid program administered by each branch of service separately. Qualification rules for Army personnel are different than for Air Force personnel. TXSG members are not eligible for this program.
    • If you have applied for FTA, but not been approved yet, answer "Yes". The final status of your FTA can be verified later.
    • If you have applied for ANY aid other than the 3 previously mentioned sources, mark "Yes" to this question, even if you have not been approved or notified of a specific award amount yet. This includes completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
