The City of Sequim Arts Advisory Commission invites you to submit your artwork to our upcoming juried exhibition to be displayed in the Karen Kuznek-Reese Gallery at Sequim Civic Center this Fall, October through December, 2022.
The winter solstice, hiemal solstice or hibernal solstice, also known as midwinter, occurs when one of the Earth's poles has its maximum tilt away from the Sun. The winter solstice is the day with the shortest period of daylight and longest night of the year, when the Sun is at its lowest daily maximum elevation in the sky. The Winter solstice may have been a special moment of the annual cycle for some cultures even during neolithic times. Astronomical events were often used to guide activities, such as the mating of animals, the sowing of crops and the monitoring of winter reserves of food. Many cultural mythologies and traditions are derived from this, including, spending time with loved ones, feasting, singing, dancing and fires.
The summer solstice, also known as midsummer, occurs when one of the Earth's poles has its maximum tilt toward the Sun. Summer solstice is when the Sun reaches its highest position in the sky and is the day with the longest period of daylight. The significance given to the summer solstice has varied among cultures, but most recognize the event in some way with holidays, festivals, and rituals around that time with themes of religion or fertility.
We encourage all North Olympic Peninsula Artists to submit artwork that visually considers the contrasts we experience during our long summer days and long winter nights. This theme is open to interpretation, we want to see artwork that explores the concepts of heat and cold, light and dark, summer and winter, sun and moon, yin and yang.
