Application Form: Hildegard Commission 2022-23
The Hildegard Commission is National Sawdust's mentorship initiative highlighting outstanding women and other marginalized genders composers in the early stages of their careers, supporting them with a commission, visionary mentorship, and access to a network of leading working collaborators. In addition to a $5,000 cash prize, a commission for Pierrot-plus ensemble, a professional performance, and a live recording, the five winning composers will receive one-on-one mentorship with established figures in the field who also serve as judges for the competition. The commissions will be performed and recorded at National Sawdust in March '23, and they will go on to be placed throughout the city at a yet to be announced site specific installation in April '23. All winners must be available to attend both rehearsals and the performance at National Sawdust, NY during March 8th to the 11th, 2023.
Details for Submission:
The extended closing date for submissions is Thursday, September 22nd at 6pm ET. Winning composers will be notified at the end of September 2022. International applicants are encouraged to apply, however please note that we do not have a budget for travel or accommodations beyond the the winners’ fee.
Commission Paramaters:
This year, the focus of the commission is on both, the poetry of the Greek poet, Cavafy, and sound art. Firstly, each commission proposal should draw inspiration from the poetry of Cavafy, and the intentions should be included in the proposal. The poetry archive can be found here: https://www.onassis.org/initiatives/cavafy-archive or through the link on the Hildegard Commission webpage. Secondly, the winning works will be recorded in March '23 and go on to be placed throughout NYC at curated site specific installations in April '23. These two prompts are to be interspersed in the work, and the composer's intentions are to be communicated in their project proposal. Proposed works to be commissioned must be written for a combination of pierrot instrumentation (flute, clarinet, piano, violin, cello, plus chamber percussion (please include a percussion list)), plus voice, narrator, and/or electronics as additional options. The work must be between 5 and 10 minutes in duration.
Deadline:
The extended closing date for submissions is Thursday, September 23rd at 6pm ET. Winners will be notified in late September 2022. Please send all email enquiries about the proposal parameters to the Senior Producer, Eve O'Donnell at eve@nationalsawdust.org *Required
