What is a Sweat Lodge
The sweat lodge ceremony is an elemental tradition. The details of the ceremony differ depending on the native custom from which the lodge is derived, however many elements remain the same. Each lodge ceremony provides an opportunity for deep connection and purification.
The lodge itself is a domed hut, traditionally built from saplings and twine and draped with blankets and sometimes tarps as well. The blankets and tarps help to provide a pitch-black environment inside, even during the daytime, and also hold in the heat. Small lodges will hold 8 - 10 people, while large lodges can hold twenty or more.
In the center of the lodge a shallow pit is dug to contain hot rocks which are heated on an external fire in a fire pit. When the rocks are hot they are transported into the lodge. Water is poured onto the rocks to create steam. The heat and the steam encourage the body to sweat and purify.
Each lodge ceremony generally consists of three to four rounds of intentional prayer. Each round has a different theme or meaning, often corresponding to the four directions and what they represent. At the beginning of each round several hot rocks are placed in the center pit. The door of the lodge is closed and water is poured on the rocks. The lodge keeper, sometimes called a "Pourer", leads the lodge and guides the participants in deep reflection. In between rounds the door is opened, allowing fresh air into the internal space as well as a new round of additional hot rocks.
At the beginning of the lodge participants crawl in on hands and knees, in a clockwise direction. At the end of the lodge individuals exit in a clockwise direction as well. If someone needs to exit the lodge because they are feeling claustrophobic or too hot, they are encouraged to exit in between rounds and are assisted in doing so safely. No one is held in the lodge against their will. Exiting out the sides of the lodge is not permitted as it can compromise the physical and energetic structure. Instead, exiting through the enterance doorway is encouraged.
Please note that we are working with the physical and spiritual essence of Grandfather Fire, a master teacher and healer. Fire hunts duress, in order to heal duress. By its nature, the fire transmutes that which no longer serves us, so that we experience freedom of the heart. Discomfort results as the fire does its work, but this transforms to a superficial experience in time, as fear subsides and acceptance is integrated. Great healing magic resides in the mystery. Therefore we enter the lodge with trust and openness, while at the same time honoring our edges. There is no shame in needing to exit the lodge between rounds if needed, to sit in resonance with the fire.
