Dinner Diplomacy

It is time spent sharing a meal in your home with participants on the International Visitor Leadership Program. If preparing a meal in your home is not your idea of an enjoyable evening, you’re welcome to host them at a restaurant. “The closest thing to describing the experience is opening your door to a stranger, and at the end of the evening, saying goodbye to a friend.” - Annette Alvarez

They’re teachers, government officials, law enforcement officers, journalists, activists, museum curators, NGO leaders…the list goes on. Each invited by the U.S. Embassy in their home country because they are professionals that work in an area that touches U.S. Foreign Policy.

An informal, relaxed evening (or afternoon) is a wonderful way to explore the world without leaving home. In the eyes of our visitors, it is an honor to receive your invitation. It's a friendly way to dispel myths and shatter stereotypes together.

Global Ties Miami staff takes care of the backend logistics, you take care of the meal. We will: 1. Match you with two or more guests (and possibly an interpreter) and share their bios & any dietary considerations with you. 2. Coordinate the date and time of your hosting. 3. Provide instructions to the visitors and/or their interpreters on how to take rideshare to your address and return to their hotel the same way. 4. If necessary, we hold your hand along the way! You will: 1. Host the visitor over a meal. It can be a meal at your home, or you can invite the visitors out to dinner at a restaurant of your choosing (Please note, if you want to host the visitor at a restaurant, we would ask for you to cover their meal.) 2. Invite any friends or family would want to join over the meal. 2. Know that the effort will well be worth it when at the end of the evening you’ve enjoyed the conversation, and smiles, as much as your guests!
