• Response to San Diego State University decision to rescind the Graduate Student Health Insurance Program

  • We, San Diego State University graduate students and the undersigned, are appalled by the decision for San Diego State University to abruptly remove student health insurance and demand for SDSU to reinstate the Graduate Student Health Insurance Program or provide graduate students an alternative option for health insurance. The high the cost of living in San Diego, and skyrocketing inflation and rental prices are major challenges that we have to face as graduate students and this abrupt change in heath insurance options is an additional hurdle that threatens our well-being as graduate students. This lack of access provides a huge burden to students and are barriers to equity and justice that are preventing inclusivity in graduate programs at SDSU. SDSU chose to make this decision to abruptly terminate vital health insurance in the midst of two pandemics and record-breaking inflation. SDSU actively worked to silence students' voices by sending this email at the close of business on a Friday, the last business day that it could be sent to give students the bare minimum, two weeks notice that they will no longer have insurance effective August 14th. SDSU outrightly evaded feedback with no effort to provide students with more notice or courtesy. Students voices were further silenced by feedback being outright ignored. We demand that SDSU considers our voices and reevaluates their decision to rescind the Graduate Student Health Insurance Program or offers a suitable alternative for their graduate students to be covered by health insurance.
