Intro to Etching and 15th Century Style Press Printing

Traditional Etching is an intaglio method of printmaking. The artist creates their image onto a metal plate using a variety of techniques and then applies ink. This image is transfered to paper using a press. This course will cover the basics of fundamental etching techniques into copper, to then printing your etchings on traditional 15th century style printing presses.
The instructor will cover:
- Brief history and relevance
- Copper plate preparation, cutting, bevelling, sanding, removing scratches
- Drypoint Technique
- Copper plate inking, registration, printing and press use
- Hardground Etching Technique
- Intro to Softground

Instructor Bio
Alison Frank’s work focuses on the development of a playful and absurd cast of small creatures created through painting, printmaking, and drawing. Alison holds a BFA from the University of Regina and an MFA in Printmaking from Louisiana State University. Originally from the South Saskatchewan prairies, she currently lives in Calgary.
