  • Tell us about all the people that have contributed to this data!

    💡Tips

Author: Name of the main person or institution responsible for producing the data.

Contributor: Any person or institution who has contributed to the dataset throughout its life cycle. Choose from a list of roles.

Data Curator: Name of the person or organization responsible for managing the data after the project ends. Main point of contact for queries about the data.

ORCID ID: An ORCID ID uniquely identifies an individual or legal entity.

  • Data Sampling

  • Tell us about the instruments and methods you used while sampling in the field.

Click the Add button to add another instrument/method.

    💡Tips

Sample Instrument Name: Here you can give the manufacturer name for the instrument you used, for example, 'Seabird SBE-43'. If you do not know the manufacturer name, enter the commonly known name for the instrument, for example, 'CTD'.

Sample Collection Method Name: If your method does not have a standardized name, you can give it a short name that describes the process or what was sampled, for example, 'Oxygen concentration measurements'.

  • Sample Analysis

  • Tell us about the instruments and methods you used while analyzing or processing the data (usually refers to any analysis or processing done in the lab).

Click the Add button to add another instrument/method.

    💡Tips

Analytical Instrument Name: Here you can give the manufacturer name for the instrument you used. If you do not know the manufacturer name, enter the commonly known name for the instrument.

Identifier ID: If your instrument has a persistent identifier (PID) that uniquely identifies it, enter the ID code here.

Identifier Type: Choose the PID type from the dropdown list.

Analytical Method Name: If your method does not have a standardized name, you can give it a short name that describes the process.

  • Related Resources

Is your dataset related to any other online material? Tell us about it here!

    💡Tips

Related Resource Name: Name of any publication or other resource related to this dataset that is not hosted on CanWIN, but on another digital platform.

Resource Code: Unique identifier (ID) code of the related resource. For example, if the resource has a DOI, write the DOI code here.

Identifier Type: Choose from a list of ID types. Here, you would select 'DOI', for example.

Relationship to this Dataset: How this resource relates to the dataset you are uploading. Select from a list of relationships. For more information about these relationships, see our help page.

Type: What exactly is this resource? Is it a journal article? Another dataset? Select from the dropdown list.

Series Name: If part of a series, identify the volume number, edition.

  • Geographic/Spatial Region Information

  • If you know the exact bounding coordinates of your location, you can enter them below.

  • Result Value Qualifiers

Result value qualifiers (RVQs) are codes used to highlight any erroneous or missing data.

For example, if some values of a variable are missing due to instrument failure, the user might use '9999' in the data to represent this.

We can therefore map this '9999' user code to the CanWIN Result Value Qualifier EFAI, which means that for this value, the sample was lost because of instrument failure.

Take a look at the RVQs and their descriptions below, and if there are any codes used in your data that correspond to a RVQ, add it under User Code in the table.

  • Data Cleaning

  • Data Dictionary

  • Describing your variables helps other data users to easily understand and reuse your data.

    💡 Help
Common name: A more common or understandable name for the variable (if available)

For example, if  'TdegC' is a variable in your raw data file that represents 'Temperature', then 'Temperature' should be the common name.

Description: Describe or define the variable in the context of how it was used or collected in this dataset.
