Evidence-Informed Strategies to Build Children's Autonomy:

Do you know a child who waits for others to do things for them?  Does the child depend on adults or peers for daily tasks and decision-making?  These are signs of “learned helplessness,” a condition that leads children to believe they are unable to learn and have little control over their lives. OT/PT practitioners and educators have the opportunity to do something to change this! "Evidence-Informed Strategies to Build Children's Autonomy" is a one-day course on children’s self-determination that focuses on strategies to promote self-reliance and reduce learned helplessness.

Workshop participants will learn how to use the “Self-Determination Strategies Toolkit©” providing evidence-informed strategies to increase children's motivation and engagement. A 2022 Temple University research study revealed that educators and practitioners who used these ten strategies observed significant increases in children's motivation and their ability to take part in learning activities. The Captain Me Program incorporates the Self-Determination Strategies Toolkit© in all its lessons to provide young children with opportunities for success!

Welcome to "Evidence-Informed Strategies to Build Children's Autonomy," a NYSOTA approved course that teaches educators and practitioners how to embed self-determination strategies into their sessions.  

Course Objectives: At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Identify at least 3 components of self-determination that can promote children’s participation in academics, self-care, and play/leisure.

2. Select 3 methods to incorporate self-determination into pediatric sessions.

3. Determine 3 ways to utilize songs, puppets, and conversation to promote children’s ability to solve problems and make decisions.

 

Participants will receive take-home unlimited streaming access to the Captain Me Self-Determination program, a professional guide with 12 interactive lessons, and 12 Learner's Checklists to collect data on children's understanding of the lessons. (Note: For those who do not have streaming/internet access, a DVD will be provided.) In addition, every attendee will receive the Self-Determination Strategies Toolkit© worksheets with evidence based intervention approaches to improve children's engagement and motivation.
