    The Overlooked Relationship Between Culturally Aware Mentorship and the Development of Young Black Men

    You are being asked to participate in a research study. Scientists research to answer important questions that might help change or improve how we do things in the future. This consent form will give you information about the study to help you decide whether you want to participate. Please read this form. and ask any questions before agreeing to be in the study. Please email Dr. Patricia Turley (jordanp@iupui with any questions you may have before agreeing to be in the study. The study wants to explore young Black males' life experiences with mentoring. You were chosen as a possible subject being in the New B.O.Y. Program. The study will focus on the growth of young Black males and if culturally aware mentors affect involvement in the justice system. We ask you to share your view on disciplinary actions and your life experiences. Ms. Jacqualynn Long and Dr. Patricia Turley from Indiana University Purdue University, Indianapolis, will conduct this study. If you agree to be in the study. you will: Attend six group interviews over six months, taking about 60 minutes at New B.O.Y. Program. We will use a fake name during in-person group interviews. so your name will never be linked to your answers. Researchers will watch you during program activities twice a week for six months, They will take notes on what they see. The time will differ depending on the activity planned at New B.O.Y. Program. Your engagement in the study will not change your disciplinary report. You will not be paid for participating in this study. There is no cost to participate in the study. There might be risks in the study. and they are listed below. You might feel uncomfortable answering some of the questions related to your life experiences. During the group interviews, you do not have to answer questions you do

    Your confidentiality may be lost due to this being a court-order program. To reduce the risks, we will take the following steps: We will use fake names during interviews, All group interview field notes, recordings. and transcriptions will be kept in a secure location.

  • We also ask each subject to respect the privacy of the group and not to share anything outside of the group. All research is voluntary. You can choose not to take part in this study. If you decide to join, you can change your mind later and leave the study at any time. If you choose not to join, you will not be punished or lose any aid. Your choice will not affect your involvement with the New B.O.Y. Program. The researchers may end your participation for the following reasons without notice: 1) if you are dismissed from the program 2) or break the confidentiality. safety, or other rights within the program. Information collected in this study may be used for other research studies or shared with other researchers for future research. If this happens, information that could identify you. such as your name and other identifiers, will be removed before sharing any data or specimens. Since identifying information will be removed. we will not ask for your additional consent. We don't think you will benefit from taking part in this study. Still, we hope that sharing your voice and experiences will improve support programming and the justice system. We will keep your information safe but cannot promise total confidentiality. Your data may be shared if required by law. Your identity will not be shared in publications about this study. Only researchers will access transcribed interviews and notes.
