The Edge Speech and Debate Club

    Information Letter
Dear The Edge families and interested families:

We hope you are all having a great summer! We’re thrilled that you’re considering joining us as we continue the adventure of a speech and debate club. We plan to hold speech meetings on alternate Mondays and debate meetings every Monday at Faith Community Church. Our email address for questions or for more information is TheEdgeSpeechandDebate@gmail.com.

    Our Mission:

The Edge Speech and Debate Club exists to equip homeschooled students to effectively communicate, to develop critical thinking skills, and to better serve and glorify God. The Edge competes in the National Christian Forensics and Communications Association (NCFCA). We strive to provide young people with skills to clearly express and tactfully defend ideas to a variety of audiences, to teach students how to speak to audiences in a way that persuades, delights, entertains, or educates, and to provide an environment in which students and parents develop a sense of teamwork and relationships based on a love for Jesus Christ and others.

    About Us:

Club Meetings: For Junior Speech (ages 8-11), Varsity Speech (ages 12-18), and Varsity Extemporaneous Speech we meet every other Monday. Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate meets every Monday.

When we gather, we meet at:

Faith Community Church 132 xRiedel Rd Gambrills, MD 21054

    We offer the following sessions:

    • Junior Speech: 2:00 – 4:00 PM At an age appropriate level (ages 8-11), students develop research, writing, memorization and delivery skills for a variety of speech categories. These students have an opportunity to show their skills at a special Junior Speak-Out program at the end of the semester (usually December). Junior Speech will be offered with priority for siblings of participating The Edge varsity students. **Note that junior speech only runs for one semester, from September 11th– December with the Junior Speak-Out presentation tentatively scheduled for December. There may be discussions of continuance in the Spring semester if more juniors are interested in junior competitions in the Spring where those juniors wanting to compete could get extra practice and feedback.

Junior-only families who do not have siblings old enough to compete (age 12 by 1/1/26) may participate in Junior Speech if we have space available. Please complete and submit the registration documents but do not send any fees. We will contact you after the deadline (8/30/25) to let you know if we have room for your children. Fees will be collected by 9/6/25.

    • Varsity Level Speech: 2:00 – 4:30 PM Varsity speech is for students ages 12-18 by 1/1/26 who will participate in at least one NCFCA tournament. Students will be exposed to a variety of types of speeches. NCFCA has 3 broad categories of speeches: platform, limited-preparation, and interpretive. Apologetics is part of the limited-preparation speech category and is specifically designed to help students defend their faith and compete in the NCFCA Apologetics category. Some apologetics instruction will be held during each speech meeting. Speech club meetings (see calendar for specific dates) are at Faith Community Church. Varsity speech meetings will be held every other Friday from 2:00-4:00 PM. If you have questions about speech or debate, contact theedgespeechanddebate@gmail.com and someone from the board will contact you.

Varsity speech students develop research, writing, memorization, and delivery skills for a variety of speech categories. The special emphasis on Apologetics is specifically designed to motivate students to study the core issues of the Christian faith and be prepared to articulate a defense of what they believe and skills that every believer should possess. First year students learn the basics without a requirement to compete in this speech category. Advanced students develop skills to compete in the NCFCA limited preparation Apologetics category.

    • Varsity LD Debate and Team Policy Research 4:30-6:00 PM (ages 12-18) Students will develop research, writing, memorization, and delivery skills to enable them to participate in a Lincoln-Douglas Debate format.  The goal in this time is to develop students’ rhetoric and logic skills in the context of competitive dialogue.

We plan to offer Lincoln Douglas Value Research and Team Policy Debate Research this season. Debate will follow speech from 4:30 - 6:00 PM. Students participating in debate are also required to participate in speech. **All debaters are highly encouraged to attend a summer camp/training opportunity. Contact www.ncfca.org for details.

    2025- 2026 Board Members:

                           Lead Speech Coach: Debbie Jarvis

Junior Speech Coach: Marlene Meza and Glenda Contreras

                           Lead LD Debate Coach: TBP

                           Club Leader: Debbie Jarvis

                           Club Secretary: Marlene Meza

                           Club Treasurer: Glenda Contreras

    Participation Information:

    • Because The Edge is a cooperative effort and parents are their students’ primary coaches, a parent of each student is required to attend and actively participate in all club meetings and varsity parents need to assist for three full days if our club hosts a Maryland tournament (dates to be determined). We are sharing our passion for speech and debate with you, family to family. Special considerations can be discussed with The Edge Board.

    • Families are required to affiliate with NCFCA prior joining the Edge (see  shop.ncfca.org ) Affiliate application opens approximately 6/1/25. Please forward your email proof of your affiliate status to theedgespeechanddebate@gmail.com. Affiliate application and information on the different types of speeches are available at www.ncfca.org under the resources tab. Local Region IX tournaments are typically held within a five-hour radius and run for three full days. Tournament dates will be announced as soon as they become available.

    • Each varsity student (ages 12-18) in The Edge will be required to compete in a minimum of one Region IX qualifying tournament. To that end, each family in The Edge is required to be an affiliate of NCFCA (National Christian Forensics and Communication Association) before the first meeting begins.

    • Students need to commit to completing and submitting assignments on time. During the first semester, expect homework assignments to take a minimum of 2-3 hours per week. During the second semester students will polish and practice speeches and participate in practice debate rounds in preparation for tournament competition. Junior speakers have a lighter load.

    • Debate and specialized speech categories require additional time commitments.

    • Active participation and teachable attitudes are expected, with a goal of excellence.

    • The dress code for club meetings is modest business casual (no jeans, athletic shoes, or flip-flops). The point of the dress code is to give the students enough opportunity to become so used to their business clothes that in an interview or presentation they won't feel distracted.

    • Membership fees are $150 per competitive family per year and $100 for junior-only family. Additional expenses may be associated with each course. Also, NCFCA affiliation and tournaments require additional fees as set forth by NCFCA. This is not a fee for taking a class; it is used for purposes such as facility fees, copies and any other expenses incurred in running the club. Our coaches are volunteers, donating their time to our families.

If you plan to participate in speech and/or debate, the best thing you can do is read! Reading high quality books is the best way to find high quality interpretive scripts. Use the ideas gained from your reading as jumping off points for your platform speeches. Ask your family members to be “scouting” for you also.

    To Join:

     • Prior to joining The Edge, affiliate with NCFCA at shop.ncfca.org

Please make sure to get onto www.ncfca.org mailing list by creating an account first to receive valuable information, especially the Parent Handbook under the resources tab.

If a junior-only family, affiliate first, then ask for a scholarship and list “Junior only family” as a reason.

    • Complete the Application form (theedge-ncfca.org) Read all remaining documents and use the checklist. You may elect to hit “Submit registration now button” instead of printing paper forms and mailing them.

    • Submit the Application form, send a copy of the  NCFCA affilliation email receipt to theedgespeechanddebate@gmail.com, and send membership fees by Sept. 30, 2025.

  • Rules of governance:

The Edge Speech and Debate Club exists to train homeschooled students to effectively communicate and to develop critical thinking skills to better serve and glorify God. To help meet this goal, The Edge requires members to affiliate with the National Christian Forensics and Communication Association (NCFCA), competes in their events, and follows their direction where provided. The Edge emphasizes parental involvement in all events. As such, at least one parent is required to participate in all club meetings with their student(s).

These rules exist so The Edge can operate smoothly.

    Mission Statement
To instruct and train students in clear, courteous, true communication via competitive as well as community speaking and debating opportunities; to equip parents to help their own children as well as other students in the club; to promote a spirit of mutual encouragement among students and parents.

Administrative Board - The Edge is governed by a board appointed at the annual summer board meeting by the current board members. Board members serve a one-year term but may be appointed to serve more than once. It is preferable, when at all possible, to have parents serve in all positions. The board consists of the Club Leader, Secretary, Treasurer, the Lead Speech Coach, the Junior Speech Coach, the LD Debate Coach, the TP Debate Coach, the Extemp Coach and the Moot Court Coach. Each member of the board has an equal say in decisions made by the board. Each Coach may also hold one of the non-coaching positions on the board.

Operation and Responsibilities -The Board will meet once each summer and additionally on an as-needed basis. If an issue arises that needs action immediately, the club leader should reach the Board’s officers by telephone, text, or e-mail to decide if a consensus decision can be made or if the entire Board needs to meet (in-person or virtually). In an emergency, the club leader will be responsible for making decisions for the club. Information regarding this decision shall be e-mailed to the club as soon as practicable. The club leader will organize and chair all Board meetings. The Board decides

How much the annual dues are
What expenses to cover (i.e. curriculum, video conferencing, or coach NCFCA affiliation

    fees)
    Where to meet
    When to meet
How to help parents handle discipline problems
What to post on the website
Who will be coaching speech, junior speech, extemp, debate, and moot court
Who to install as new board members
The meeting dates for each semester
    10. Who to suggest to NCFCA officials to serve in roles during a tournament

    11. Any changes to the governing documents

    Job Descriptions

Parents are ultimately responsible for their children and have authority over them in all matters, including their participation in The Edge club activities. Parents are a crucial factor in the success of The Edge. The Edge parents are required to take an active role in the club; this is not a drop-off activity. First year parents must attend the classes with their students, and at least one parent from each family must always be on-site during any club activities, no matter how many years the family has participated in The Edge. Classes provide the information necessary for parents to function within the club. Parents are expected to participate in and assist with coaching, judging, decision-making, and general supervision. Parents are also expected to assist in the running of any tournaments that The Edge may sponsor. They commit to making sure their student(s) complete assignments for meetings and prepare for tournament competition.

Coaches - The Edge may have coaches for the following areas: Varsity speech, Juniors speech, LD debate, TP debate, Extemp, and Moot Court. The Varsity Speech Coach is also the lead speech coach. The Administrative Board will appoint the coaches for the upcoming school year by June 1st of the previous year if possible. Any parent interested in teaching may do

so, and experienced teachers will mentor new parent-teachers. Coaches are responsible for establishing communication with their students and making sure someone manages any technology that is needed to conduct meetings.

    a. Varsity Speech – This person is considered the lead speech coach and will be responsible for establishing a speech curriculum, which includes scheduling any speech classes, room assignments and instructors/coaches. Additionally, the speech coach will advise parents and students regarding standards of literature and appropriate subjects which historically have done well in NCFCA competition. The varsity speech coach will be responsible for explaining NCFCA competition rules so that student’s scripts will follow the correct formats; this may include forming a script review committee.
    b. Junior Speech coach – The junior speech coach will be responsible for establishing a speech curriculum and organizing a presentation event for the junior students at least once a year. Additionally, the junior speech coach will advise parents and students regarding standards of literature and appropriate subjects which historically have done well in prior events. The junior speech coach will be responsible for making sure junior students and their parents understand the NCFCA rules for junior speakers.
    c. Debate - The lead debate coach(es) will be responsible for establishing a debate curriculum, which includes scheduling debate classes, room assignments and teachers; establishing evidence standards and, training critical thought
processes; and ensuring allowable tactics and techniques are employed by students. Additionally, the debate coaches will make recommendations regarding Team Policy team pairings, but the final decision remains with the parents.

  • The Edge Speech and Debate Club

    Parent Responsibilities

Running a speech and debate club is a lot of work and we can’t do it without wholehearted parental participation. Would you please review this list of requirements? Don’t worry—we have a list of requirements for your student to review too! The club will run much more smoothly and our students will learn more if we all understand the expectations.

    1. A parent must participate in club meetings with their student/s. At the meetings parents will learn alongside their student(s) and give feedback to students about their speeches and debates. Since we are training our students to communicate with a wide variety of people, our students need feedback from both people who are inexperienced and experienced in public speaking.  You may also be asked to serve in some other capacity such as helping to set up chairs or serve refreshments, or be a zoom camera monitor.
    2. Families who join The Edge must affiliate with the National Christian Forensics & Communications Association.  Information is available at www.ncfca.org.
    3. Parents help their student(s) complete assignments on time. Club activities often build off the assignments, so everyone loses a little when a student is unprepared.
    4. Parental participation in our area’s tournament is mandatory. We need at least one parent from your family to participate in all of the following tournament activities:
           A. Recruit community judges. We’ll provide materials and tips to help you do that.
           B. Assist in getting ready for the tournament. We will do our best to give you duties that fit your gifts and energy level.
           C. Be on-site at the tournament for the entire time that the tournament is running (typically all day Thursday, Friday, and Saturday).
    5. Parents need to extend grace often, model Biblical conflict resolution, and give                                        gentle and honest feedback.
    6. Please help our students adhere to the dress code by dressing in business casual attire.

Thank you for committing to this venture with your students. We look forward to serving you and serving with you.

  • The Edge Speech and Debate Club

    Junior-Only Parent Responsibilities

Participation in our Junior Speech Club lays the foundation for public speaking in a variety of forums.  For us to cover the maximum amount of information in the allotted time-frame, we need wholehearted parental participation. The club will run much more smoothly, and our students will learn more effectively if we all understand the expectations.

If your oldest child participating in The Edge is between ages 8 and 11, please review this list of requirements and initial your agreement on the Application Form.

         1. A parent of each student must actively participate in club meetings with their student. Parents are the primary coaches of their students. At the meetings parents will learn alongside their students, help present new ideas and skills, and also give feedback to all students about their speeches. Even if you are not experienced with public speaking, your input is valuable because we are training our students to communicate with a wide variety of people.

         2. Parents help their students complete assignments on time.

         3. Junior-Only parents (those whose oldest child participating in the Edge is between 8 and 11) are expected to arrive on time, sign in with their children, and remain in the classroom with their Junior Club student.

         4. Younger siblings may entertain themselves quietly in the same room with electronic devices (they must remain silent), coloring books or other quiet activities. Younger siblings should be able to sit quietly and independently for one hour at a time.

         5. As Christians called to be peacemakers and encouragers, parents need to extend grace often, model Biblical conflict resolution, and ensure that feedback given to students, coaches, and/or other parents is gentle and honest.

         6. Dress code for club meetings is junior casual which means no athletic shoes or flip-flops. Even with this relaxed dress code, we do expect all students to adhere to modesty and decency. Young ladies should be mindful of their skirt lengths and all students should avoid form-fitting clothes. As parents, we are serving as models for our students, so we do ask parents to be mindful of the dress code and do their best to serve as models for our young people.

Thank you for committing to this venture with your student. We look forward to serving you and serving with you.

  • The Edge Speech and Debate Club

    Student Responsibilities

We’re excited to have you as part of The Edge! Every organization has to have some rules or else it quickly becomes chaotic. Please look over these rules and discuss them with your parents.

    1. Students need to arrive punctually to meetings.
    2. Students need to complete and submit all assignments on time.  Club activities often build off the assignments, so everyone loses a little when a student is unprepared. Acquire assignments from coaches after your sessions.
    3. Students need to have a willing and teachable attitude.
    4. Students need to give gentle, honest feedback to their coaches, teachers, and peers.
    5. Students need to participate in at least one tournament. Participation has three parts: delivering at least one speech three times or debating for at least six rounds; encouraging other participants by listening to their events; and helping when you see a need or your help is requested.
    6. Students need to dress modestly at all The Edge events.  For club meetings students need to dress in business casual attire which means collared shirts for young men and no jeans, athletic shoes or flip-flops.  Wearing business attire at club meetings gets you used to the clothing so it isn’t a distraction when you are speaking to an audience. At tournaments, students will need to adhere to the NCFCA dress code which is available at www.ncfca.org .

    Peacemaker's Pledge

A Commitment to Biblical Conflict Resolution

✅ As people reconciled to God by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we believe that we are called to respond to conflict in a way that is remarkably different from the way the world deals with conflict.1

✅ We also believe that conflict provides opportunities to glorify God, serve other people, and grow to be like Christ.2 Therefore, in response to God's love and in reliance on his grace, we commit ourselves to respond to conflict according to the following principles:

Glorify God — Instead of focusing on our own desires or dwelling on what others may do, we will rejoice in the Lord and bring him praise by depending on his forgiveness, wisdom, power, and love, as we seek to faithfully obey his commands and maintain a loving, merciful, and forgiving attitude.3

Get the Log out of Your Eye — Instead of blaming others for a conflict or resisting correction, we will trust in God's mercy and take responsibility for our own contribution to conflicts—confessing our sins to those we have wronged, asking God to help us change any attitudes and habits that lead to conflict, and seeking to repair any harm we have caused.4

Gently Restore — Instead of pretending that conflict doesn't exist or talking about others behind their backs, we will overlook minor offenses or we will talk personally and graciously with those whose offenses seem too serious to overlook, seeking to restore them rather than condemn them. When a conflict with a Christian brother or sister cannot be resolved in private, we will ask others in the body of Christ to help us settle the matter in a biblical manner.5

Go and be reconciled — Instead of accepting premature compromise or allowing relationships to wither, we will actively pursue genuine peace and reconciliation—forgiving others as God, for Christ's sake, has forgiven us, and seeking just and mutually beneficial solutions to our differences.6

By God's grace, we will apply these principles as a matter of stewardship, realizing that conflict is an assignment, not an accident. We will remember that success in God's eyes is not a matter of specific results, but of faithful, dependent obedience. And we will pray that our service as peacemakers will bring praise to our Lord and lead others to know His infinite love.7

    Statement of Faith

    1. We believe the Bible, consisting of the Old and New Testaments, to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative Word of God.
    2. We believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.
    3. We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God. We believe in His deity, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious death and the atonement through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory.
    4. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets. We believe that regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential for the salvation of the lost and sinful man. We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit, by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life.
    5. We believe there are three persons in the Godhead, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one eternal God, the same in substance, equal in power and glory.
    6. And we believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ; and we look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.
