  • Infrastructure: opportunities amid the obstacles

Session 1 will take place on Wednesday, 14 September, from 10:00 - 11:15.

We pursue a proactive approach to overcoming challenges of infrastructure in the agricultural sector. Roads, rail and ports have hamstrung producers and agribusinesses for far too long, crippling productivity, market access and often profitability.  In many instances the answers have been found in take-charge private-public partnerships, and even community/producer -led “out of pocket” interventions. A panel discussion on achieving meaningful progress, and opportunities amid the obstacles.

  • The fresh face of rural revival

Session 2 will take place on Wednesday, 14 September, from 12:30 - 13:45.

Rural communities are essential for the equitable growth of agriculture in South Africa. But dwindling job opportunities have reduced the economic base of these communities, resulting in disrepair and decay. To save these communities and ultimately bring them into the fold of production, we need to reduce urbanization, drawing people back to work and live in spaces they can be proud of, that speak of dynamic transformation and inclusive growth. A panel discussion on achieving a lived social compact for rural revival.

  • Economic collision course: driver or driven?

Session 3 will take place on Thursday, 15 September, from 10:00 - 11:15.

The impact of global markets on South Africa’s growth trajectory cannot be underestimated, but many role-players in the local agri sector are pushing for a more proactive approach to economic policy, rather than merely reacting to events and conditions beyond our control. This calls for a united goal, and a concerted, collective effort from agri organisations, agribusinesses and producers alike, to drive more favourable conditions. A panel discussion with industry experts looking at the challenges and opportunities

  • Winter grains: a boost for barley

Session 4 will take place on Thursday, 15 September, from 12:30 - 13:45.

Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine places special significance on the Western Cape’s winter crop season of 2022/23, with opportunities arising to boost domestic production, especially of barley.  The focus is on ensuring that barley competes sustainably with other crops, that the supply chain works effectively and that risks are limited as far as possible while delivering good quality crops. While good rainfall during planting bodes well, increased input costs and variable weather conditions will play a major role in determining a good season amid international shortages. A panel discussion with leading experts to discuss challenges, evaluate opportunities and project market-related results.

  • Rural Safety: YOU are the difference, in collaboration with Agri Western Cape:

Session 5, will take place on Thursday, 15 September, from 14:30 - 15:45.

Farm attacks and violence in rural areas have a discernible impact on production and the sustainability of the sector, demanding urgent intervention. Achieving material rural safety will require a multi-pronged approach where solutions are found for community safety, farm safety and home safety. Lessons learned are shared in a panel discussion with the main purpose to prevent future incidents.

  • Youth: technology and strategies for the future

Session 6 will take place on Friday, 16 September, from 10:00 - 11:45.

The future success of any sector in the digital age is determined largely by its adoption of technology and its strategy for adapting to everchanging variables. The same is true of the agriculture sector. So how are we integrating the youth into our strategies for production, research and policy? Who are the decision-makers, the change-makers, the fresh-thinkers and the action-takers? And how do we reimagine the whole sector for an often-uncertain tomorrow? A panel discussion to anchor tomorrow in positive change, today.
