  • In order to serve the schools in unincorporated Harris County, the Fire Marshal’s Office is requiring completion of this self-evaluation form. This form is required to be submitted to the HCFMO no later than April of each school year.

  • In accordance with the adopted fire code (IFC 2021 and approved amendments) and Texas Education Code 37.108, all Multi-hazard emergency operations plan shall be prepared and maintained for school instructional facilities. This plan must be submitted and approved by the Fire Code Official.

    In accordance with IFC Harris County Fire Code 2021
  • Combustible storage is kept 24 inches below the ceiling in non-sprinkled building and 18 inches below the ceiling in sprinkled building.
  • Combustible storage is kept out of electrical/mechanical rooms.
  • Storage of flammable/combustible liquids, corrosives, and other chemicals are stored in approved cabinets.
  • Exit Signs are illuminated and have adequate backup power or batteries.
  • Emergency Lighting is illuminated when power is interrupted.
  • Documentation identifying the last date of application of any fire treatment product is available on campus.
  • Electrical outlets, fixtures, junction boxes, etc. have covers, extension cords are not being utilized for permanent power, electrical appliances are being utilized in accordance with manuafacturers specifications & a minimum three feet of working space is kept around electrical panelboards and other equipment in electrical/mechanical rooms and other areas containing such equipment.
  • Fire Lanes have appropriate markings and are free of obstructions including vehicles, debris, buildings, gates without approved locks, etc.
  • Gates across access roads have approved locks or key boxes (Knox).

    Furthermore, it should be understood that these are the minimum standards for fire and life safety and are based on normal hazards observed when conducting inspections in school buildings. If and when an inspector conducts a site visit, additional hazards not indicated on this form may be identified which will require corrective actions.
