Patient Care Technician + Course Description
The Patient Care Technician+ (PCT+) program prepares Certified Nursing Assistants with the knowledge and skills in advanced patient care techniques. This program expands on the student's knowledge of healthcare and introduces advanced patient care skills through hands on clinical and lab training in the classroom. This program provides competency training and education in various areas such as fundamental patient care, performance of ECG testing, and phlebotomy. Students will perform 42 hours of classroom and skills lab training.
Course Objectives
The course has been organized around major units. Each unit is reflective of the objective set forth for this course. At the completion of the course, the successful student shall be able to:
Identify the stereotypes and myths associated with aging
Explain the changes in the anatomy and physiology of the body systems caused by aging
Summarize the major diseases and disorders faced by older patients
Describe the various screening tools for dementia, depression, and malnutrition
Explain the effects of aging on sleep
Differentiate among independent, assisted, and skilled nursing facilities
Determine the principles of effective communication with older adults
Identify legal and ethical issues associated with aging patients
Explain how each element of the chain of infection contributes to infection
Identify the body's normal defenses against infections
Demonstrate the proper procedure for hand hygiene
Demonstrate technique for gowning and gloving
Prepare a sterile field
Perform an accurate recording of the electrical activity of the heart (ECG)
Collect a venous blood sample with a syringe
Collect a venous blood sample using an evacuated tube
Routine capillary puncture
Routine urinalysis
Identify common complications of wound healing
Apply a bandage
Apply a binder, arm sling, and T-binder
Identify interventions for the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers
Perform professional-level cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
Upon successful completion of the Patient Care Technician+ program, the student will:
earn a Certificate of Completion through FTC Adult Education.
be prepared to test for NCPCT credentialing through NCCT.
be prepared to test for NCET credentialing through NCCT.
be prepared to test for NCPT credentialing through NCCT.*
*Must perform a minimum of 25 successful venipuncture and 5 capillary sticks on live individuals within 2 years to meet eligibility for the NCPT exam.

Qualifications:
To be considered for acceptance into the Patient Care Technician + program, interested individuals must:
CNA certified.
Be a minimum of 17 years of age.
Submit a high school transcript or HiSET/GED certificate, which is required if taking the national exam.
Submit application form and tuition/course fees in full.
Results of current Tuberculosis test must be provided prior to the first night of class.
Students are required to wear scrubs to class at their own expense (no specific color or pattern).
A Social Security number is required for enrollment.
Requirements and Fees:
Tuition and course fees of $540(without certification test) or $659(with NCPCT certification test).

Complete 42 hours of in-class instruction.
Students must SUBMIT to venipuncture sticks and capillary sticks by fellow students.
Must perform a minimum of 25 successful venipuncture and 5 capillary sticks on live individuals within 2 years to meet eligibility for the NCPT exam.
This course is not eligible for financial aid.
Program requires 90% attendance.
Overall "C" course average to successfully complete.
