This is the registration for one of five CTLE workshops being offered as a part of the JOURNEY Arts in Education program's teacher professional development series.
Empowering NLA Students through La Casa en Mango Street
Date: October 24th, 2022
Where: Huntington Fine Arts (In-Person Only)
266 Pulaski Rd, Greenlawn, NY 11740
TIME: 4:30 pm–7:30 pm (space is limited)
Author, poet, educator and cultural events coordinator Adriana Devers will discuss Sandra Cisneros, “La casa en Mango Street” and how it presents a variety of topics on social issues that we still face in today’s society. Literature is meant to empower, to connect, to build a bridge that allows the readers to see themselves through the story at hand. Mango Street does just that, it tells a story that many of us can connect to, it teaches our students the value of their own stories and the impact that our heritage has on us. This workshop addresses the main themes presented in the novel, with useful student centered activities, writing assignments and other tools that would add more value to your lesson (if it’s already part of your curriculum) or would make you want to add it to your repertoire.
CTLE Credits – 3 (Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, Communities, creating, producing, responding, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity)
COST: Workshops are FREE for teachers in school districts participating in the 2022-2023 JOURNEY Arts in Education program. For all others, the cost is $50 per workshop.
