Clergy Development Funding Request
These funds are for clergy who are pursuing clergy development, coaching, or spiritual direction opportunities that exceeds what is available through Continuing Education Funds. These funds are not eligible to go toward degrees or certifications beyond seminary or to go toward pilgrimages or UMVIM trips.

To complete this application, you will need a statement of goals as it relates to the opportunity. For the application to be reviewed, two letters of recommendation are necessary - one from your S/PPRC Chair and one from your District Superintendent. If you are serving in extension ministry then your immediate supervisor should complete the recommendation in place of an S/PPRC representative.

The deadline is quarterly on January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1.

Clergy Development Funds

Criteria: The learning opportunity must 1) promote servant leadership and spiritual growth; 2) encourage theological reflection; 3) encourage personal growth and self-awareness; and 4) strengthen skills applicable for ministry. This can include participation in a learning cohort, a continuing education workshop or event. Lodging and meals are reimbursed with a maximum per diem allowed. Participants contribute their travel costs, books, time and full participation in the event.

Coaching Funds

Clergy Development Funds may be granted for up to 24 coaching sessions in the first year of a new appointment or for other significant appointment setting changes, at $3,000 maximum per year. In the second year, the maximum is $2,000. In the third year, $1,000. By then, sustainable coaching should be a part of the clergy and appointment's funding plan. Coaching funds are not available beyond the third consecutive year of coaching.

Funding Disbursement for Clergy Development Grants

The deadline to apply for Clergy Development funds each year is: January 1, April 1, and July 1 and October 1. Notification occurs a month after the deadline and will occur through the Center of Clergy Excellence. Please select below the preferred method of payment should you receive a grant.

In awarding grants, primary consideration will be given to applicants with special identified needs and applicants who are at critical points in ministry (for example, appointment changes, life changes, potential for exemplary leadership).

The application and selection process is confidential and conducted by the Clergy Development subgroup of the Board of Ordained Ministry. Funding will be made payable to the sponsoring agency, coach, or applicant, as appropriate.

Participation in the approved learning experience must begin within 6 months of the funding approval. Once the learning experience or coaching has been completed, an evaluation of learning should be completed. If this form is not completed, funds will not be available to the applicant in the future.
