  • Background:

    AmeriCorps engages approximately 75,000 individuals in intensive service each year at more than 21,000 locations across the country including community, department of corrections, faith-based groups, nonprofits, public agencies, and schools. Civic-minded Americans of all ages commit to service terms that range from a few months to one year to address critical community needs such as provide support to formerly incarcerated individuals as they navigate the post-secondary education system in to reduce recidivism in the county, increasing academic achievement, mentoring youth, fighting poverty, combating the opioid epidemic, sustaining national parks, preparing and responding to disasters, and more.  In exchange for their service, AmeriCorps members earn a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award (equal to the maximum Pell Grant for a full-time service term) that can be used to repay qualified student loans, or pay for college or trade school.While there is no typical AmeriCorps member, individuals selected for AmeriCorps will demonstrate a commitment to service, a willingness to use their time and abilities to improve the lives of others, and an interest in learning new skills.  Through their service, they will bring to life the AmeriCorps ethics of community and responsibility.

    EMU: Navigation Returning Citizens AmeriCorps Program is focused on providing economic opportunity along with access and support to pursue post-secondary education pathways to obtain and maintain subsequent employment for a better quality of life, in which will continue to reduce Washtenaw County’s recidivism rate.
  • III. Program Description

    The NRCA Program is housed at Eastern Michigan University, and will place up to 20 AmeriCorps Member at various Washtenaw County non-profit organizations and educational institutions dedicated to assisting formerly incarcerated citizens (returning citizens) in both accessing and persisting in post-secondary opportunities including training, certificate and degree programs. Members will support a cohort of 50-100 prospective enrolled NRCA participants throughout the term of service. Members meet one-on-one with participants to serve as system navigators addressing challenges and barriers that often arise with formerly incarcerated individuals such as: probation/parole stipulations, financial aid, retrieving transcripts and prior educational documentation, identifying barriers, financial education/resources, technology barriers related to educational access and persistence; academic preparedness, awareness of academic policies, important dates, and relevant deadlines.
