Eligibility
You must meet the following requirements:
- You must be 18 years old.
- You must be physically fit and healthy to meet seafarer medical requirements.
- You must know how to swim.
- You must comply with the "zero tolerance" drug policy and smoking rules.
- No felony convictions in the past ten years.
- You are financially responsible for travel to and from the ship.
- You are financially responsible for country visa requirements.
- You must agree to be filmed/photographed while on a mission.
Selection Process
The ship is crewed first with veterans who create the backbone of operations and then professional, qualified seafarers to ensure that the Flag State's mandatory safe-manning at sea requirements are met.
Once the officers are crewed, we look for crew with transferrable skill sets, a positive attitude, an understanding of how to share quarters with others for a lengthy duration, and those who naturally want to help out any department whenever possible.
The selection process relies heavily on your availability. You are often contacted with little time before deployment and needed onboard for three months. The number of applicants does exceed the number of beds available on board. For this reason, and with availability lining up, you may not get the chance to crew on board.
Time Available
You should be available for the specified journey time and allow an additional three weeks for delayed departures due to weather or ship repairs. It is common in any maritime industry to experience delays, especially with a non-profit working on a tight budget.
Once you apply, your details will be put in the database. We will keep your application on file for ten years, so there is no need to reapply within this time. It is vital to keep us updated with any new skills or changes in availability or if you can no longer crew.
Positions Available
There are six primary areas onboard and the following positions within each.
1. Bridge - Captain, Officers, Communications
2. Deck - Bosun, Deckhands
3. Engine Room - Chief Engineer, 2nd Engineer, 3rd Engineer, Oiler, Electrician
4. Galley - Head Cook, Sous Cook
5. Media - Videographer, Photographer, Drone Pilot
6. Science - Biologist
7. Medical - Medic
Your Expenses
Once accepted, you must pay for travel to and from the vessel, which may not return from the same port they left. This includes ground transport as well. Ensure you have adequate savings so that they can easily travel home once their role has finished or in case of an emergency.
All crew are responsible for their travel or medical insurance.
All crew are also responsible for their visa applications and costs.
Once accepted you will be provided a bunk and three vegan meals daily.
Other expected costs are personal items such as a local SIM card for phone calls or wifi, clothing, tools, snacks, travel, or entertainment.
Do not apply if you are unable to cover the overhead costs.
Crew application fee is USD 100.00
This fee is used so the crew department can complete daily tasks like making phone calls, using Wi-Fi, and accessing organizational tools, as well as crew meals on board, providing essential equipment on board the ships such as life-saving equipment, engine parts, fuel, docking fees, etc. The list goes on.
It also ensures applicants are serious and those who genuinely want to volunteer are contacted rather than being lost in a giant pool of names.
The Crewing Coordinator's discretion can waive the application fee for those holding maritime certifications. At this point in time, it is very much appreciated to those willing to forgo the waiver while we get up and running.
