I retired as a colonel from the US Marine Corps in 2013 after almost 28 years of service. I have served in a number of leadership roles in both the private and federal sector since leaving military service. For the past two decades, I have served in various director positions and as president for large homeowner associations in Hawaii and Virginia. I am delighted to have the opportunity to be considered for an upcoming position as Membership Representative on the Mayacama Residence Club Association Board. I would like to thank Mr Stuart Singer for all his efforts and contributions to the Board during the past two years. I have participated by phone in almost every annual owners’ meeting since becoming one myself and have taken a keen interest and appreciation for the significant efforts and improvements that continue to be made on every level. I have listened to other owners and met many in person, always trying to gain added perspective on what they enjoy most about Mayacama and what they would like to see in the future as it continues to grow and evolve.

After my wife and I visited Mayacama for the very first time, we instantly knew it was a special place. I decided my retirement present would be to become an owner, which we did in 2014. Every staff member and owner we have met since our initial visit has been welcoming and accommodating. Since our first stay, we have been fortunate to have so many wonderful memories at Mayacama , including sharing many with family and friends. The last several years have been challenging for all of us, but the staff and management at Mayacama have somehow survived wildfires and a global pandemic, only to be even stronger today for the club, its owners and members. I look forward to contributing in any way possible to ensuring our club continues to be one of the most sought-after residence clubs today.

My professional career consisted of two roles.  I am a lawyer and I represented companies in business and employment disputes.  Over the years, I tried more than 70 cases to juries.  Among other things, I am a Fellow in the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, a select group of lawyers who are admitted by invitation only after a lengthy vetting process.  I was also involved in law firm management; I served an eleven year term as managing partner of a 120 lawyer firm.  In 2012, we combined that firm with a much larger regional firm ( Ice Miller), and I subsequently served as one of four managing partners for an additional three years.  When Ice Miller changed its governance, I was elected as a Director of a newly created Board.  I retired from active practice at the close of 2020 but continue to manage some remaining cases.

My interest in the position is based upon experience in both fractional ownership and golf club membership.  My wife Janis and I owned a fractional interest in Timbers-Snowmass for 20 years.  As owners of that interest, we also visited and evaluated ownership opportunities at other fractional properties including: Scottsdale, Cabo San Lucas, Kauai and Maui.  Therefore, I have some familiarity in the operations of several fractional real estate communities.  As to golf, we are long time members at Muirfield Village Golf Club, a Jack Nicklaus designed course which hosts the annual Memorial Tournament.  In short, I have both the time and the interest in serving as a Membership Representative and appreciate the opportunity to present this brief statement.

For the last 20 years I have served independent schools in leadership roles as senior administrators. Initially in Florida at St. Edward’s School, Director of External Studies, followed by admissions and international outreach for 10 years. Answering to a national search I was hired by The Bishop’s School in La Jolla and served there for ten years. During my tenure at these schools I was responsible admissions, for building capacity, developing strategic initiatives, and collaborating with all constituents in a meaningful way to achieve institutional/mission goals. In addition to admissions, I was responsible for a 4.1M financial aid budget.  From 1998 to 2004 I served on the Board of Directors of the Education Foundation of Indian River County, the last two years as President. The Foundation benefited all schools, public, private and parochial, we doubled revenues, increased visibility through marketing and advancement opportunities and greatly improved community relations.  Other board commitments included Board of Trustees, Community Church, Vero Beach, Florida with a membership of 2,000 individuals from 2004-2008. We were responsible for fiscal management, Church budgets, staffing evaluations, and developing compensation structures. I served as Chair of the Personnel Committee. From 2008-2012 I was board member of the Post Chapel at Indian River Medical Center, Vero Beach, Fl. Over the many years of independent schools, I was a volunteer faculty member and committee member on many national organizations. The most recent board commitment was from 2018-2020 as a founding board member of the Character Collaborative, an organization made up of independent school, college and university leaders to address the many complexities of the admissions process and bring national focus to character and non-cognitive attributes.  The earliest focus of my career was hospitality. I worked on large megayachts in the Caribbean and then in 1998 purchased a 15-bedroom Inn on a private island in Maine which I managed for the next 12 years, selling it in 2000. This experience of being in the weeds of a 24/7 boutique hotel gave me great insight of staffing, guest expectations and relations, and maintaining core values. These skills provided a solid foundation for community work in education.

Education: Master’s in Education (concentration in International Education) Endicott College, Madrid, Spain 2008. Bachelor of Arts, Connecticut College, New London, Connecticut, 1980.

Interests: Golf, travel, cooking, fitness, and most of all spending time with family.

We are truly blessed to be able to travel both domestically and internationally and yet as we land in Santa Rosa we feel the same excited anticipation we experienced the very first time we came to Mayacama. We cannot wait to play the first round, walk the course, talk with our caddie, reconnect with staff, unpack and settle into “our home”.  Serving as HOA Membership Representative is a way to give back to a place that gives us so much and is a path to learn more about the community and club.  Given my background and experience above, I believe I can bring strategic thinking, organizational and long-range planning that might be a benefit in the future. A club community is not that different from an educational community in that there are many stakeholders and constituents, leadership and governance, and pertinent varying interests and challenges to be taken into consideration.  As an aside and on a personal note, I am learning that to take on a game like golf late in life, requires patience, dedication, resilience, and a little bit of grit. While I may not have extensive golfing background, I do bring the passion of a new player to the table and hard work that goes with it!
