Kim Cooper
For the last 20 years I have served independent schools in leadership roles as senior administrators. Initially in Florida at St. Edward’s School, Director of External Studies, followed by admissions and international outreach for 10 years. Answering to a national search I was hired by The Bishop’s School in La Jolla and served there for ten years. During my tenure at these schools I was responsible admissions, for building capacity, developing strategic initiatives, and collaborating with all constituents in a meaningful way to achieve institutional/mission goals. In addition to admissions, I was responsible for a 4.1M financial aid budget. From 1998 to 2004 I served on the Board of Directors of the Education Foundation of Indian River County, the last two years as President. The Foundation benefited all schools, public, private and parochial, we doubled revenues, increased visibility through marketing and advancement opportunities and greatly improved community relations. Other board commitments included Board of Trustees, Community Church, Vero Beach, Florida with a membership of 2,000 individuals from 2004-2008. We were responsible for fiscal management, Church budgets, staffing evaluations, and developing compensation structures. I served as Chair of the Personnel Committee. From 2008-2012 I was board member of the Post Chapel at Indian River Medical Center, Vero Beach, Fl. Over the many years of independent schools, I was a volunteer faculty member and committee member on many national organizations. The most recent board commitment was from 2018-2020 as a founding board member of the Character Collaborative, an organization made up of independent school, college and university leaders to address the many complexities of the admissions process and bring national focus to character and non-cognitive attributes. The earliest focus of my career was hospitality. I worked on large megayachts in the Caribbean and then in 1998 purchased a 15-bedroom Inn on a private island in Maine which I managed for the next 12 years, selling it in 2000. This experience of being in the weeds of a 24/7 boutique hotel gave me great insight of staffing, guest expectations and relations, and maintaining core values. These skills provided a solid foundation for community work in education.
Education: Master’s in Education (concentration in International Education) Endicott College, Madrid, Spain 2008. Bachelor of Arts, Connecticut College, New London, Connecticut, 1980.
Interests: Golf, travel, cooking, fitness, and most of all spending time with family.
We are truly blessed to be able to travel both domestically and internationally and yet as we land in Santa Rosa we feel the same excited anticipation we experienced the very first time we came to Mayacama. We cannot wait to play the first round, walk the course, talk with our caddie, reconnect with staff, unpack and settle into “our home”. Serving as HOA Membership Representative is a way to give back to a place that gives us so much and is a path to learn more about the community and club. Given my background and experience above, I believe I can bring strategic thinking, organizational and long-range planning that might be a benefit in the future. A club community is not that different from an educational community in that there are many stakeholders and constituents, leadership and governance, and pertinent varying interests and challenges to be taken into consideration. As an aside and on a personal note, I am learning that to take on a game like golf late in life, requires patience, dedication, resilience, and a little bit of grit. While I may not have extensive golfing background, I do bring the passion of a new player to the table and hard work that goes with it!
