Coaching/Trapping Request
  • VERY IMPORTANT: Scammers take advantage of missing pet posts. If you receive a text with little to no info only "I found your dog" followed by something to the effect of needing to "verify your owner, I'll send a code" DO NOT respond to these people. They are attempting to hack. Delete and block number. ‼️Please screenshot the information that is shown after you submit your form. All steps need to be followed in order for me to help to my fullest extent.

  • Coaching/Trapping Request

CCRT does NOT charge for ANY services but encourage and greatly appreciate donations towards equipment management, baiting supplies, gas funds, etc. This form will help me understand the situation of your missing pet or stray dog. Some questions may not apply to your situation, for these answers please answer N/A.
  • Format: (000) 000-0000.
  • Have you obtained permission from this land owner to set up feeding stations/trap? (If not please do so! VERY IMPORTANT)
  • Date your dog went missing (or when the stray was FIRST spotted)
     - -
  • Please TEXT the most CLEAR and most CURRENT photos (1 side view and 1 front view) of your missing dog or stray to Emma at 757-675-3662

  • Below are very important tips/steps that will help jump start the trapping process (if needed) or get your dog or stray safe without a trap!

  • First initial steps:

-Missing (or found for strays) report to local shelters, Facebook pages, Nextdoor App, and Pawboost.com

-For owned pets check local shelter IN PERSON every other day. Do NOT rely on calling and asking, you must go in person. If microchipped, report as missing.

-For owned pets place flyers (example pictured below, flyer created by Professional Pet Trackers) ASAP for neighborhoods hand them out, place on mailboxes, doors, nearby parks, business etc. For rural areas do the same but also make "yard sale" type signs with the flyer stapled on to really stand out on the side of the road

-The same can be done for strays in hopes to find owner! Do not assume dumped! Dogs can travel miles away from home while results in poor body conditions. Strays MUST be reported as "found" when spotted or caught.

-Place fresh food and water on the premises (in a safe area) of where your missing dog or stray has been seen or went missing from. If possible a game/trail camera is VERY helpful to confirm the dog is coming to particular spot.

-Scent trails are important! These scent trails (instructions under feeding station below) will help if wildlife, outdoor cats, etc interfere (as they usually do) pour in a "wagon wheel" pattern making your feeding station the center of the wagon wheel.

This stinky mix soaks into the ground providing your dog or stray the curiosity of finding food incase other critters are eating from your feeding station. Repeat every 2-3 days depending on weather (if rains  repeat when the weather clears) The feeding station is the center of wheel and your trails are the spokes. You can also cut up old shirts with your scent and sheets in small squares to spread on these trails too.

-Grill bacon/hotdogs/steak with liquid smoke on property of where your dog was last seen/went missing from/where stray has been seen. This could help draw your dog out or keep them in the area.

-For owned pets leave scent articles on property. This includes your dogs bedding (also save some at home sealed in a bag and place in freezer, this can be helpful if a certified pet tracker needs to step in) place your worn clothing in area preferably in a tree etc to carry scent (your pillowcase, socks, shirt, etc)

3, 4, 5 are the various "Missy Traps" CCRT has built and have available. These run off sensors in which is set to dogs height. When they cross the sensor in the back of the trap a magnet that holds the door in the "open" position will deactivate which quickly and quietly shuts dog inside trap

6 and 7 are "box" or "traditional" traps. We have a few of these traps that are mostly used for small and medium breeds only. The dog will walk inside stepping on a trip plate which causes the door to spring shut.

  • Feeding station information

  • Leave high quality food (atleast 3 of the following items at one time) for feeding station which I recommend any of the following:

    -your dogs regular kibble

    -hotdogs

    -sardines in water or oil

    -canned chicken

    -canned fish

    -alpo wet food

-dry kibbles n bits (bacon flavor)

    -pulled pork

    -vienna sausage

-canned pate cat food (only small amounts)

You can mix all of this together. Only leave about a cup per feeding as we want the dog to stay around but also want more and not be full

You can also rub bacon grease on tree trucks nearby!

  • Scent trail information

  • You may use 2 or 3 following items mentioned above and add to a gallon jug with water. Mix up well. Pour or poke holes in top of jug and sprinkle about every 3-5 feet in wagon wheel shape. Any path the dog crosses in this trail will lead them to feeding station.

  • What to do if your missing dog is spotted (or stray is seen)

  • If seen report to area ASAP and practice calming signals. Bring high quality treats/food and a SLIP leash.

    Calming signals and basic info:

    What NOT to do:

Don't make eye contact with the dog. Eye contact to animals can be a sign of dominance. We do not want them feeling threatened

Don't chase! Even the smallest/pitiful looking dogs can be FAST!

Don't expect your dog to behave in a normal way, even if you have known the dog for years. (Research "Flight mode in missing pets")

Don't move toward a dog if the dog shows signs of getting ready to bolt.

    Don't kneel or squat.

Don't call the dog's name, even if it's your dog!

Don't grab for the dog, this can result in a bite or breaking any trust you may gain with the dog.

Don't put your hand over the dog's head.

    What TO do:

If this is your dog, just talk in a normal tone of voice, or turn to the side and call the name of another dog in your household. Use commands/words that may be familiar to dog.

Watch the body language of the dog, and adjust your actions according to what makes the dog more comfortable.

Have plenty of high-value dog treats, such as hot dogs, fried chicken, cheeseburgers, or pizza.

If at all possible, try to lure the dog away from busy streets, to a yard or park or quiet side street, before you continue with calming signals.

Call a friend to bring treats to you if you don't have any.

Get closer to the dog by walking in a path 45 degrees to the side of the dog and gradually spiraling closer.

Sit on the ground with your legs stretched out in front of you.

Turn your body to the side so you are not facing the dog.

Pretend to eat the dog treats, and "accidentally" drop some.

Eventually, toss some treats toward the dog, but not at the dog.

Use a "magnet dog" if you own this dog or comfortable if stray seems dog friendly. Place a long line onto magnet dog and allow them to approach, interact with magnet dog (take a walk in hopes target dog follows) feed magnet dog treats.

Instead of looking at the dog, look at your phone, and use the front or back camera to monitor the dog’s behavior. As far as the dog is concerned, you are completely ignoring her.

Get a picture, in case this attempt fails and the dog runs off again. Silence your camera-phone, so the shutter noise doesn't scare the dog. (This step is important for stray cases)

Take your time, and let the dog come up to you when he is ready.

If possible, have an assistant keep people away, so you have room to work and no one interferes.

Let the dog eat out of your cupped hand.

    Yawn several times.

If the dog is eating out of your hand, gently rub under the chin. Don't force the dog. Only pet the dog if he's comfortable.

Let him see the leash and smell it before you put it over his head.

Even if your close to leashing dog, don't undo all of the trust you've built by grabbing at him.

  • CCRT can place trap when:

-Property owner grants permission for trap. -Dog is confirmed at feeding station property
  • Usual procedure for CCRT traps

Every case is different and things can and will change
  • -Emma and Clifford will come and bring trap equipment

-We will place trap with fresh water outside trap and food outside of trap. The trap will not be triggered to set off.

-Once confirmed dog is coming to trap, the food will slowly be inched inside at dogs pace.

-door will be required to be bungeed OPEN unless CCRT says otherwise.

-once dog is comfortable entering trap, person manning trap will be instructed to set trap to trigger.

-traps must always be monitored and when dog is trapped, must be removed immediately. If trapped in box trap, trap is required to be transported with dog inside and taken inside a closed room or building to remove dog. This prevents escape.

-if trapped in missy trap most likely Emma and Clifford will come help remove with catch poles to prevent escape. Atleast 2 people are needed for this process. The dog must be leashed before the door is opened. Recommended the dog be carried with double leashes to car or home or crated and carried in crate.

  • Once your pet is home the following items are HIGHLY recommended

  • Always treat as a flight risk! Double leash for potty breaks. I recommend and use the following items for flight risk dogs (I personally use the harness lead in conjunction with a martingale collar OR the martingale collar and slip lead)

All the items linked below are offered on Amazon.com as well for faster shipping

-martingale collars (my favorites are Max & Neo brand) you'll want to fit snug. When in the "relaxed" position you'll want to be able to fit 2 fingers in collar and when tension the collar will be tight enough the dog can't slide out of collar.

-Harness lead (escape proof harness that can also be a leash)

    https://www.harnesslead.com/collections/all

-slip lead (favorite brand is Mendota as they have a stopper so can't slide off dog)

    https://www.mendotapet.com/collections/leads-leashes

-car seatbelt (used for transport so dog can't dart out of door)

  • Again CCRT does not charge for trapping or coaching. Being a 1 woman 1 hound operation, Clifford and I appreciate any support we can get. We use funds to help the next families/dogs in need, maintain and replace our equipment as needed, and get from point A to point B! Thanks for trusting us to help get your dog home safely or provide a stray with a new life off the streets!
