The Farms: An Allerton Folk School is seeking and accepting applications from its community members who are interested in becoming a facilitator for a folk school class and/or workshop. These individuals must be willing to guide students learning a new skill or craft and be open to learning, as well. Previous teaching or facilitating experience is prefered, especially in hands-on and experiential education. Facilitators can lead classes and/or workshops in the following core areas:
- Art - All disciplines from visual art, ceramics, and print-making to film-making, music, and fiber arts. Supplies, tools, and space should all be taken into consideration when applying.
- Nature & Outdoor Education - Topics would include hiking, backpacking, tent camping, bird & tree identification, and gardening.
- History & Storytelling - Engage the public in discussion and education in local and regional history as well as making connections between the Allertons and historical events.
- Science - Topics based in anything science-related including but not limited to climatology, biology, etomology, and engineering.
Community members can also apply to facilitate a gathering in music, dance, storytelling or other event that brings our community together and enjoying each other's company. Gatherings can include but are not limited to music jam sessions and sharing stories around a fire.
The examples listed above in each area are merely suggestions, and all ideas are welcome. If you would like to apply to be an instructor, but are unsure of where your subject would fall, please send an inquiry to allertoninfo@illinois.edu.
Allerton will provide the following for each class/instructor:
- Space for the class or workshop
- Marketing and advertising
- Reigstration
- Reimbursement of materials purchased for class
