  • What we do

Tweed Valley Wildlife Carers is run entirely by volunteers who commit time assisting our native wildlife.

Our objectives and aims revolve around the conservation and welfare of our local wildlife. Our main aim is the rescue, rehabilitation and release of native fauna using methods and knowledge gained from many years of experience in the field. We rely on community support to continue to operate our services.

Our wildlife rescue and rehabilitation group has been looking after the wildlife in the Tweed Shire for over 30 years. We work 365 days a year, with our wildlife rescue phone hotline open 24 hours per day 7 days per week for the Tweed community.

Our volunteers undertake training in the rescue and care of native wildlife. it is our policy that all volunteers undertake induction and/or training at TVWC prior to commencing their volunteer position. TVWC operates under the NPWS licensing regulations and codes of practice for wildlife.

We have many opportunities for you to volunteer to help our wildlife. Some of the work we do includes our FRONT LINE EMERGENCY SERVICE

    • Manning our wildlife Rescue Phone Hotline for a few hours.
    • Rescuing and/or transporting sick or injured animals to vets or carers
    • Caring for animals while they recuperate from injury, until they are ready to be released back into the wild. (All carers operate under the supervision and approval from species coordinators)

    Phone Hotline 📞

    Emergency Help

    Available 24/7

  • Image field 78
  • Our Phone Operators (affectionately called "Phonies") are the 000 for wildlife.  The Phonies work from home, and take the initial call for help from the members of the public. We have a great Phone Coordinator who works with and supports all the Phonies.
Phonies are the first point of contact for the community. It works like this 😊

    1. Members of the public call our Hotline 0266724789 for assistance to rescue or assist our wildlife.

    2. Phonies may call the species coordinators for expert advice

    3. Phonies call the available rescuers and transporters to assist the animals in distress.

Starting out as a Phonie begins with having a Phonie buddy and just watching and listening to the calls.

Phonie training is a gradual process until you feel confident.
The training is usually done at your Phonie buddy's home, during a live shift, and only for a couple of hours at a time. You will learn so much about how to help our wildlife from being a Phonie as well as supporting our community members.

  • TRANSPORTERS 🚗. 🚑

Transporters are the very important ambulance drivers who take animals to hospital, vets or a carers. The animals are already securely contained in a box or crate for safe transport ready for the transporters. Active members use their own vehicles to transport animals. Claims can be made for petrol costs.

  • RESCUERS 🐣 🦔 🐍

Rescuers are trained members who attend to calls from the community for animals in distress, and with assistance from experienced species coordinators, assess the situation and conduct a rescue. The wildlife may be injured (eg. cat attack, car strike, fishing line entanglement, caught in fruit netting, window strike, blown out of a nest, trapped in a building).

  • Animals may also be orphaned or underweight and sick.... whatever the situation, rescuers will try their best to help.

  • CARERS 🐥🐍🦜🦔

Carers have completed training modules, have worked with a buddy and are under the supervision of the species coordinators.

For most, Caring is not the first place to start.  Members work up to this highly trained work and becoming a carer takes time.

Caring takes a very dedicated, patient and devoted person.

  • Availability for FRONT LINE EMERGENCY SERVICE

TVWC members who are involved in front line activities like the Hotline Phones, Transport and Rescue, set aside some time each week, to assist our precious wildlife.

TVWC uses two communication methods to speed rescue and work as a team

  • Image field 105
  • 1. Viber - a cross-platform messaging app that lets you send text messages, and make phone and video calls. Members post their availability daily or for the week. You simply download the app and you can see whats happening in real time.

    2. Roster System - Members devote a set time and day each week. This helps many members plan their time and work as a team. Team work is very important.

  • Supporting the Frontline

Skills to support our wildlife and the community.  These activities are vital to our continuing service.

TVWC needs skilled volunteers to be part of our team Perhaps you already have a set of skills that would be invaluable to TVWC.  Can you help?

Active members are a vital part of TVWC.

Active members are the front line rescuers, ambulance officers, and carers for our wildlife.

They are also behind the scenes volunteers like the communications and media people, records officers, graphic designers, technical officers, strategists and planners.

Active members involved in daily rescues and transport, commit some hours each week on a monthly roster, for rescue and transport and hotline phones. This speeds rescue and saves lives and shares the work load amongst a dedicated and great team.

Many members work full time or part time and commit time on the weekend or through the week to help wildlife.

  • TVWC Supporters SAVE LIVES  🙏

Many people cannot participate in the day to day workings of the group as an Active Member and prefer to join as a Supporter. Supporters are very important to TVWC and are greatly valued. Many TVWC supporters are people who are unable to commit time to being active members and participating in the daily service of rescuing and transporting animals, caring, administration, fund raising etc They may also be people who may not live in the Tweed Shire or bordering it.

  • Image field 118
  •

Many supportss live interstate or overseas, work full-time, have family commitments or have transport or availability issues.

Supporters contribute valuable funds for the rescue, care and. treatment of wildlife. 100% of sponsor funds go towards medicines, equipment, food, rescue cages and housing.

Your support contribution represents an important conservation intervention for Australian wildlife.
