Fire awareness training - Downpatrick MRF
Introduction to Fire Safety
Fire safety training is a legal requirement. This section aims to ensure that all employees understand the basics of fire prevention, evacuation procedures, and personal responsibilities.
Understanding Fire: The Fire Triangle
A fire needs three elements: Heat, Fuel, and Oxygen. Removing one element extinguishes the fire.
Common Causes of Fire in Waste Sites
- Sparks from machinery
- Overheating electrical equipment
- Improper disposal of flammable materials
- Smoking (strictly prohibited on site)
Types of Fire (Classifications)
- Class A: Solids (wood, paper, waste)
- Class B: Flammable liquids (fuels, solvents)
- Class C: Gases (LPG, aerosols)
- Electrical fires
- Metal fires (rare on site)
Fire Prevention on Site
- Maintain good housekeeping
- Keep escape routes clear
- Store flammable substances safely
- Report hazards like spills or overheating equipment
- Never obstruct fire exits or extinguishers
Fire Signage
- Red: Fire alarm points
- Green: Fire exit signs
- Blue: Mandatory fire door signage
- Yellow: Warning signs for flammables
Action on Discovering a Fire
1. Raise the alarm at an activation point
2. Do not attempt to fight the fire unless trained and safe
3. Evacuate via the nearest exit
4. Stay low in smoke
5. Go to the fire assembly point (front car park)
Evacuation Procedures
- Supervisors manage roll call
- Never re-enter a building until cleared by emergency services
Fire Extinguishers (Theory Only)
- Water (Red): Class A fires
- Foam (Cream): Class A & B
- CO2 (Black): Electrical
- Dry Powder (Blue): A, B, C (use cautiously indoors)
Your Responsibilities
- Know evacuation routes
- Report concerns immediately
- Take fire drills seriously
- Never assume someone else raised the alarm
Other Emergency Procedures
In addition to fire emergencies, staff should be aware of the following procedures:
- Medical Emergency: Alert a first aider or supervisor immediately. Do not move injured persons unless they are in further danger.
- Hazardous Spill: Evacuate area, inform supervisor, and follow spill control procedures.
- Severe Weather or Flooding: Await instruction from Site Manager or HSEQ team. Move to designated shelter areas if necessary.
- Security Threat: Follow instructions given by management or emergency services. Do not confront suspicious individuals.
