David Serkin Ludwig's Inside-Pitchpresentations on music history for curious minds
David Serkin Ludwig, Dean and Director of Music at Julliard joins us to discuss Beethoven's influence. The piano trios written by Joseph Haydn are essentially works where the piano is accompanied by the violin and cello to reinforce its sound. Mozart developed the form away from the “accompanied keyboard sonata” by giving some more independence to the string instruments. But it was Beethoven who truly liberated the piano trio and elevated it to its place as one of the most popular forms of chamber music, ubiquitous in salons and concert halls ever since. In this Inside Pitch we will trace the evolution of the piano trio, focusing on Beethoven’s groundbreaking output to understand why the piano trio is such a successful and enduring musical medium.
