    CONTEXT

    While your work will involve working with both small groups and individuals this position primarily exists to support individuals to achieve their personal goals and to empower people to have greater control and authority in their lives.  The role by definition is broad and will vary depending on each individual you are supporting. The support is provided within the context of each person’s NDIS plan and is intended, primarily, to support each person to achieve the goals in their plan.

    Milparinka is committed to supporting participants and their families to have the authority to design and direct their own supports, so you should expect that your work role may change as individuals develop and seek out new opportunities. 

    In supporting people to achieve their ambitions and to be included in their communities your work will  involve a broad range of aspects including  partnering with people and their families, referral, relationship and communication facilitation, skill development, being based in partnership organisations to support someone's inclusion and increasing the capacity of community venues  through things such as training and education. In your work there will be a continued emphasis on sustainability and safeguarding of individuals achievements and lifestyles.

     

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

    • To recognize each individual’s uniqueness, their passions and who they are.
    • To know, and work towards achieving, each participants NDIS goals with them.
    • To keep records, as required, of the achievement of NDIS goals
    • To empower participants and recognise their authority to craft, govern, oversee, steer and guide their supports. To support individuals and families to see themselves as a point of influence that can make things happen rather than a point of request which requires approval.
    • Ensure that the supports provided to each person make sense in relation to their goals. The conceptual base for this is model coherency.
    • To respond to individual's ambitions by initially taking an approach which considers normative solutions ahead of special segregated solutions.
    • When individuals require specific support such as personal care and social skill development that this is provided in the context of people’s ambitions and making possible for people with different abilities to participate fully in the community and have great lives.
    • To be alert to opportunities that may present themselves.
    • To be aware of and research events, activities and opportunities in the local community.
    • Be a positive role model that promotes and enhances a positive image of each person supported.
    • To be a relationship facilitator for our participants, supporting them to develop and maintain relationships with others.
    • To be a communications facilitator supporting people to develop and use a range of communication strategies that allows them to have relationships with others and influence their environments.
    • To work with occasional supervision and to exercise some judgment in regular independent decision making.
    • To document and implement programs for adults with a disability.
    • The undertaking of personal care tasks such as showering and supporting people to go to the toilet, including dressing, wiping, changing clothes and cleaning in the case of accidents.
    • Supporting people who need assistance with eating and drinking.
    • To be responsible for an individual or group of participants during program activity including all of the incumbent tasks that are inherent in this support. These tasks will vary from group to group, however all staff should expect on a regular basis to:
    1. Drive high ace Vans. These are small commuter buses that take up to 11 passengers.
    2. Physically assisting people with disabilities, who have stability issues such as ataxia to get in a range of areas, the use of hoists, supporting people as they walk,    supporting people in and out of the buses, find their seats and strapping them in.
    3. We have a number of people in this environment who will because of lack of communication skills and physical capacities, will regularly grab, tug or drag on      staff with varying degrees of force to gain their attention or hold onto staff for support such as when disembarking from buses.

     

    • We have some people with low impulse control and volatile behaviours which require on occasion the immediate evacuation of others. This may require staff to move quickly out of the way, and certainly at times to assist participants with disabilities, some requiring physical support, to move quickly out of the way.
    1. Responding to emergency incidents and administering      first aid, such as with seizures.
    2. The occasional pushing of wheelchairs and moving of    furniture such a tables and chairs to prepare areas for        different uses.
    3. Support and supervise services users in a range of            exercise activities, both as directed by a therapist and in    community venues.
    4. To implement behaviour management strategies in            consultations with Behaviour specialists.
    • To administer prescribed medication as required. (As per agency guidelines).

     

    ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

    • To complete and report incidents/accidents involving participants/staff.
    • To record details in reference to participants goals, behaviours and program involvement as per agency procedures.
    • To notify management in the event of damage to service venue, vehicles and/or equipment.
    • To utilize local corrective actions/procedures to resolve any complaints, grievances in the workplace.

     

    SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES

    To be aware and perform all duties in accordance with the agencies policies and procedures.

    • Other Duties as directed.

     

    MANAGERIAL SKILLS

    • Ability to manage time, take initiative and work independently.

     

    INTERPERSONAL SKILLS

    • To promote good public relations on behalf of the agency.
    • To promote community understanding and awareness of the rights of people with disabilities.
    • To establish and maintain positive relationships with participants, colleagues, community groups and other agencies.
    • Well developed written and oral communication skills.
    • Ability to negotiate and gain co-operation and support of others in a team environment.
    • Ability to plan work schedules, prioritise work and complete tasks on schedule.

     

    ACCOUNTABILITIES AND EXTENT OF AUTHORITY

    • This position reports directly to Assistant Program Manager/Co-ordinator responsible for the areas of work.
    • Make decisions day to day in relation  to activities in consultation with  participants and families. Significant changes must be reported and discussed with a supervisor.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Preferred/Non Mandatory: 

    • Cert 4 Disability Services
    • Tertiary Qualifications – Diploma Level
       

    KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

    • Ability to support people with disabilities to work toward the achievement of NDIS goals.
    • Ability to support people with disabilities and their families to have the authority to craft, govern, oversee, steer and guide their supports.
    • Ability to Work in partnership with a broad range of people and community agencies/venues  to increase their capacity to include people with disabilities.
    • Ability to manage time, take initiative and work independently.
    • Ability to undertake personal care tasks and all other physical tasks incumbent in supporting a group of participants.
    • Ability to facilitate the development of personal and social skill individuals may need to facilitate community inclusion.
    • Ability to respond to peoples needs in an indivualised way.
    • Well developed computer literacy and written and verbal communication skills.

     

    OTHER SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCES

    • Experience in working with people with intellectual, physical or multiple disabilities.
    • Awareness of the NDIS and contemporary approaches to the rights and service needs of people with disabilities.
    • Current drivers license required.

     

    SALARY AND CONDITIONS

    • Salary and Conditions will be in accordance with Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Award Level 2.
    • Full time positions will be 38 hours per week, part- time hours may vary between positions.
    • Part time Positions have pro rate entitlements.
    • Casual positions are employed on an hour by hour basis.
    • The employer shall make superannuation payments on behalf of the employee in accordance with the requirements of the Superannuation Guarantee (Administration) Act 1992.
    • Salary Packaging in accordance with the Milparinka’s Salary Packaging Policy will be available.
    • Demonstrate the absence of a relevant criminal history for which a NDIS Worker Screening Check will be required.
