• FFSSA Fleece Performance Approval Form, Provisional Registration Form, and Transfer Form

FFSSA Fleece Performance Approval Form, Provisional Registration Form, and Transfer Form

  • * All adult sheep must be mid-side micron tested and meet FFSSA fleece grading criteria to be registered as FFSSA approved sheep (Premium Grade 1, Grade 1, Premium Grade 2, Grade 2 or 3 for ewes and Premium Grade 1, Grade 1 or Premium Grade 2, and Grade 2 for rams).

    * Sheep will be required to have micron testing done for "Approved" fleece registration at the age of 22 months or older. This will be done in addition to any testing that was done prior to the sheep turning 22 months old. The 22 month fleece grade will be included on the pedigree and signified by one of the following abbreviations: PG1, G1, PG2, G2 or G3.

    * All Rams must have their fleece grade as a PG1, G1, PG2 or G2 to be included in the Registry.

    * Sheep, less than 22 months old, from FFSSA registered rams (PG1, G1, PG2 or G2) and ewes (PG1, G1, PG2, G2 or G3) can qualify for “Provisional” registration by submitting this Fleece Performance Approval and Provisional Registration Form and the fees to the Registry.

    * “Provisional” fleece registration will only be offered to progeny from two (2) FFSSA registered parents. Eligible micron data from 22 months of age onward can be submitted for qualification for "Approved" registration. This would be PG1, G1, PG2 or G2 for rams and PG1, G1, PG2, G2 or G3 for ewes. Sheep from G4 or G5 ewes or ones sired by a G3, G4 or G5 ram must submit micron data at 22 months to be considered for inclusion as an FFSSA approved sheep.

    * Converting from “Provisional” to “Approved” is done by submitting 22-month (or older) micron data to the Registry. The Registry Chair determines approval of the sheep and if approved, sends an embossed sticker (with fleece grade) to the owner for placement on the sheep’s registration certificate. The Registry is notified to upgrade the sheep to “Approved.” There is no fee for this upgrade.

    * All sheep will have their grade designated as: PG1, PG1, PG2, G2 or G3 and if there isn't any micron information available for ancestors on the pedigree, the letter "N/A" for unknown will be used.

    * All applications must be signed by the breeder/owner.

    * Registration fees: $6 for ewes, $10 for rams, $4 for transfers.

    * Mentoring and education are offered to all members through their regional representatives and the website. Members are encouraged to seek help making breeding decisions so that they gain a better understanding of the effects of breeding choices. (for example: using a G4/G5 ewe instead of a PG1, G1, PG2, G2 or G3 ewe)

Disclaimer: At the time of registration, the sheep listed on the Fleece Performance Approval and Provisional Registration Form grade at or above the stated grades per FFSSA's grading chart. Due to variances in aging, gender, and environment, there is no guarantee that these animals will maintain these grades in subsequent testing.

  • FFSSA Performance Registry Form Instructions

  • The FFSSA Performance Registry offers two types of registration:

    1. Approved Registrations for sheep 22 months and older and,
    2. Provisional Registrations for sheep less than 22 months who have two FFSSA registered parents.

How to Apply for Approved Registrations

Step 1) Join FFSSA as a Senior, Junior, or Associate with Registry Privileges member. If you are a Senior or Junior member you have already had your sheep micron tested and will need to determine which sheep on your OFDA 2000 Report (summary page) to register. You will also submit the NASSA registration certificate if one or both of the sheep’s parents are NOT FFSSA registered.

Step 2) If you are an Associate Member with Registry Privileges and have NOT micron tested your sheep, take a mid-side sample from each sheep and send samples for testing.

Step 3) When you have the OFDA 2000 Report (summary page), write the sheep name on this report for each sheep you want to register. The report is ready to submit.

Step 4) Scan the front and back of each sheep’s NASSA registration certificate. The back side of the registration certificate should include the name of the sheep. (NASSA certificate is not required if both parents are FFSSA registered.)

Step 5) Fill out the sections of this form that are applicable.

Step 6) Attach scanned documents in the Upload Section at the end of this form. Sign and submit completed form.
