Inflation Reduction Act Home Upgrade Options
As longtime energy efficiency specialists, Green Homeowners United is working to help residents find out how to benefit from the new Inflation Reduction Act's new incentives to upgrade our homes to be green! Answer a few questions to find out how it (and we!) can help your home.
Where we can help:
Following a recent series of articles printed across the state which highlighted how Green Homeowners United is helping people address climate change at home, we need to clarify where we are able to help residents with energy assessments and upgrade services. At this time, we can only help in the following areas:
Which describes you?
*
I am the owner of a single family home
I am the owner of a duplux, tri-plex or 4-unit residential building
I am a renter looking on behalf of a landlord
I am looking to purchase a home soon
I am the owner of 5-unit or more apartment building
I am interested in options for a commercial/industrial/agricultural property
NONRESIDENTIAL - Note, most of the questions below are aimed at residential buildings, however there are a number of benefits for nonresidential buildings too!
I'd like to learn more about qualifying for a possible federal tax deduction of $0.63 per square foot of commercial/industrial space for upgrading lighting systems BEFORE DECEMBER 31st 2022
I'd like to learn more about qualifying for a federal tax deduction of $2.50-$5 per square foot of commercial/industrial space AFTER January 1, 2023
Neither at this time
Thank you! Please choose the "schedule phone call" option at the end of this form
Because every building can differ so much, and because some of these rules are so new, we will need to ask a few more questions verbally with you to be able to best help! The following questions are only for residential buildings now. Thanks!
What upgrades are you most interested in?
*
Insulating & sealing my home to reduce heat loss/gain and stop drafts
Upgrading my basement to reduce heat loss & moisture concerns, and provide a more finished brighter look
New air conditioner and/or "heat pump" to cool (& heat) the home
New Energy-Star windows
New high efficiency furnace/boiler
Water heater
Solar panels
Whatever is available now
Insulation & "air sealing"
One of the most energy saving improvements, dollar for dollar. Insulating attics, walls, basements and occasionally floors, as well as "sealing" them to reduce air leaks, can save energy throughout the year.
(Insulating/Sealing) The Inflation Reduction Act has instant rebates based on the result of an energy assessment of between $2,000 - $8,000. Would you like to learn more about getting an energy assessment?
Yes
I've already had one

Air conditioner/Heat Pump
High efficiency versions of air conditioners can do more than cool the home, they can heat it too to reduce natural gas use. The Inflation Reduction Act has a lot of incentives to get a heat pump!

Congrats! You should be eligible for a heat pump instant rebate!
Based on your answer, you should be eligible for an instant rebate that immediately reduces the bill for a new heat pump by EITHER $8,000 or 50% of the total bill, whichever is less. AND you can qualify for an approximately $2,000 federal tax credit for it!
Congrats! You should be eligible for a heat pump instant rebate!
Based on your answer, you should be eligible for an instant rebate that immediately reduces the bill for a new heat pump by $8,000 off the total bill, meaning it could very well cost you $0! AND you can qualify for an approximately $2,000 federal tax credit for it!
Congrats! You should be eligible for a heat pump federal tax credit!
Based on your answer, you should be eligible for an instant rebate that immediately reduces the bill for a new heat pump by ~$1,000 off the total bill AND you can qualify for an approximately $2,000 federal tax credit for it!
Energy-Star Windows
Energy-star windows can reduce air leaks and heat transfer through double or triple pane windows thanks to a "Low-E" coating and gas in between the panes of glass.
The Inflation Reduction Act has a new tax credit of up to $600 per year for windows if you buy 4-6 windows in a year (credit averages $120 per window, up to $600), otherwise you could get an instant rebate of $2,000-$4,000 off if you get an energy assessment and windows are part of a plan to reduce your utility bills by 20% or more.
I'd like to talk about being part of a program to replace 4-6 windows per year so I can slowly replace all of my windows and qualify for the $600 each year!
I'd like to learn more about getting an energy assessment so I can find out how I could get $2,000-$4,000 immediately off a larger window project
I'm going to hold off on windows at this time
High-efficiency furnace or boiler
High-efficiency furnaces or boilers can reduce your gas bills as well as your electric with better fans/pumps.
The Inflation Reduction Act has a new tax credit of $600 per year for energy-efficient furnace or boiler, otherwise you could get an instant rebate of $2,000-$4,000 off if you get an energy assessment and furnace/boiler is part of a plan to reduce your utility bills by 20% or more.
I'd like to learn more about the federal tax credit only for replacing the furnace or boiler
I'd like to learn more about getting an energy assessment so I can find out how I could get $2,000-$4,000 immediately off the cost of installation and a $600 tax credit later
I'm going to hold off on furnace/boiler at this time
Water Heater
One of the new incentives is for "heat pump water heaters" (HPWH). HPWHs don't use natural gas, and are more efficient. They can also help dehumidify the room they are in too!

Solar Panels
The Inflation Reduction Act has renewed the federal tax credit back to 30% of the cost of the solar panel installation. The law can also provide $2,000 - $8,000 in rebates if you get an energy assessment beforehand.
ENERGY ASSESSMENT
The Inflation Reduction Act has a lot of incentives available to homes that receive an energy assessment. You can qualify for a $150 federal tax credit for getting an assessment, and an energy assessment can unlock $2,000 to $8,000 off of home upgrades (depending on income)

Congrats! An energy assessment can help you save money
If the energy assessment shows you how to reduce your utility bills by 20% or more, you'll immediately receive $2,000 in direct funds towards installing those improvements. If shown how to reduce by 35% or more, you'll immediately receive $4,000 instead!

Note: Multi-family buildings
The wording of the Inflation Reduction Act is that if the building is a multi-family building, the above instant rebates following an energy assessment are multiplied by the number of units in it! (i.e. a 5 unit building could get a maximum of $40,000 in rebates!)
Energy assessments cost $350, and you'll receive a federal tax credit for $105 for it. If we perform upgrade work on your home we can reduce the total by the cost of the assessment too. Assessments generally take a few hours in the home and more outside of it researching on behalf of your home on how to save money.
