Fascinating facts: leadlight glass, mosaics and how glass gets its colours.
This house number was made by Geoff Petty a local leadlight glass artist. Though Geoff is now dead, his artwork lives on. Geoff used the same glass in this mosaic as is used in conventional leadlight windows and artwork. It includes transparent, textured transparent and opaque glasses. The opaque glass (see the red, purple and dark green) is beautifully striated with color. This type of glass is often more expensive than transparent glass. Glass is coloured by adding metallic oxide powders or finely divided metals while the glass is in a molten state. Copper oxides produce green or bluish green, cobalt makes deep blue, and gold produces wine red and violet glass. Leadlight glass art is so named as traditionally lead came (strips of soft lead with a channel to hold the glass) is soldered together to hold the glass.
