If you missed the last one, our popular combination IS BACK once again.. Owls and Astronomy!! Enjoy a deep dive into the owls of New York, their important role in our ecosystem and learn about the owls that fledged here at CEED. The one and only Ranger Eric Powers will be leading the Owl Prowl and will have a lovely special visit from his friends James MacDougal and owl, Aria. After our short owl talk, we will head out on our trails to see if we can hear our local owls hooting. We will also keep our eyes out for any other nighttime creatures, such as flying squirrels, fox, bats and opossums.
After the night hike, you will be tantalized with a powerful telescope and someone that knows how to use it… our Special Guest, Astrophysicist Charlie Eder! The planets and Pleiades will still be visible, and Orion will just begin to rise around 6:30p.m. so we may get to look at the Orion Nebula. That night is also just a few days ahead of the peak of the Geminids which is one of the most prominent meteor showers of the year. We encourage you to bring your own binoculars, and even cameras to practice long-exposure photography. If cloudy, we will switch to a digital presentation for your enjoyment.
Remember to wear sturdy footwear and dress for the weather as the trail is uneven at times and the evenings can get chilly!
