Dear Contestant:
Congratulations on taking your first step to becoming a Phoenix Leather titleholder, and a contestant for International Mr. Leather (IML) or International Ms. Leather (IMSL).
The structure of this contest will be similar to the IML/IMSL contests. On Thursday evening we will hold an informal cigar social. Friday evening we will hold a more formal meet and greet social for the contestants and judges. It is a good idea to wear what you would normally wear to a leather bar and conduct yourself in a social manner at these events. On Friday evening you will be introduced to the audience as a contestant and will publicly draw your stage appearance number, which will also determine your interview time for Saturday.
On Saturday morning, contestants will have an private interview with the judges. Interviews will last approximately 30 minutes each to allow the judges to become familiar with the contestants and their views of leather and the leather lifestyle. You will be asked your opinion on many topics during the interview.
International contest judges have put heavy emphasis on speaking ability and the ability to spontaneously and confidently answer questions about topics such as leather sex, illegal drug issues, HIV/AIDS issues and politics; therefore these may be an emphasis at our Phoenix Leather contest.
On Saturday afternoon, contestants will set up and display silent auction items. These items should reflect who the contestant is personally and in their leather life. You can display individual items, or group your items together as a basket or other form of display. You will have an area of approximately two feet by two feet to display your items and proceeds from the silent auction will benefit the Mr. and Ms. Phoenix Leather travel fund. All items displayed in the silent auction become properly of the contest for use in current and future fundraising efforts.
On Saturday night, we will hold the Mr./Ms. Phoenix Leather contest, which includes the “formal leather and speech” category and the “sexy-wear and on-stage question” category. During the “formal leather and speech” portion contestants should appear wearing full leather, a uniform, or another choice of formal
leather attire. Each contestant will make a short speech to the audience concerning the image of leather, how they would represent leather, or a similar appropriate topic of choice. There is a time limit of 90 seconds, which is strictly enforced both at the local contest and at IML & IMSL.
For the “sexy-wear and on-stage question” portion, it is important that your attire show you off at your sexiest. You are required to pass through public areas between the dressing room and the ballroom. If your attire for sexy-wear is not street legal, you must make sure that you have something with which to cover yourself between the dressing room and the stage that makes you street legal. If you are unsure whether your attire meets this requirement, please check with the contest coordinator or den staff.
Ms.contestants will also perform an on stage fantasy. The performance may not exceed 3 minutes and must be completely performed within a 10’x10’ area on the stage. More details will be given in the second packet of information.
There will be a panel of judges for this contest, which will consist of respected members of the leather community with a range of political, geographical, and social backgrounds.
Contestants are scored as follows: Saturday Interview 0-60 points, Silent Auction Display 0-30 points, Formal Leather and Speech 0-50 points, Sexy-wear and On-stage Question 0-30 points, Overall weekend attitude and personality 0-30 points, Fantasy (for Ms. Contestants only) 0-50 points. You should note that the overall weekend category will be judged throughout the weekend whenever the contestant has contact with or around the judges.
In addition to these contest requirements, contestants should be available on Saturday afternoon for possible rehearsal, last minute instructions and stage planning.
The winner must be available to host at least two fund raisers before the IML/IMSL contest to raise money for the travel fund, hold charity fund raisers throughout their title year and must be available to judge next year’s Phoenix Leather contest. They will also represent the community at events locally and nationally as their schedule and finances permit.
The Mr. winner of the Phoenix Leather contest will represent Phoenix at the International Mr. Leather contest, the Ms. winner will compete at the International Ms. Leather Contest. More information on the details will be provided by the producers in another document.
Money from the travel fund will be used to secure hotel accommodations and airfare for the winner.
Applications are due no later than Jan. 31, 2024. $25.00 registration fee is required at the contestant meeting that will be scheduled and communicated to contestants after all applications are accepted. It is generally the Wednesday before the contest events..
If for any reason you cannot attend, please contact an event producer, Stephen Bloom or Kenneth Anthony, in advance. At this meeting, a second packet of information, detailing your responsibilities for the weekend will be given to you.
