Applications are requested for the 2023-2024 Artist-in-Residence Season; applications must be submitted by January 22, 2023, 11:59 EST. Applicants will be notified by the end of March 2023.
Eligibility and Requirements
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the start of the residency. Current Montgomery College employees and students are not eligible. Please note housing is not provided.
A stipend will be available pending budget approvals. If applying as a group, each person must fill out a separate application and be eligible under all requirements.
GENERAL PROGRAM INFORMATION
Statement of Purpose
The artist-in-residence (AIR) program will be in person and/or virtual. We are looking for artist(s) to creatively capitalize on available in-person and virtual learning environment to engage our students, support and enhance the artistic and educational environment within the Visual and Performing Arts Department and add to the visibility of the arts at Montgomery College (MC) Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus.
The AIR Program will provide opportunities for up to two working professional artists to produce work and engage in projects involving the academic programs in an interactive setting designed to augment the Visual Art and Design programs. The program will be one semester in duration. To maximize interaction with academic programs, residencies will align with the academic calendar.
Residency Expectations
- The residency will be in person and/or virtual.
- Please indicate on your application if you prefer a hybrid residency (utilizing the AIR studio in Cafrtiz and contributing to our Social Media pages or virtual only)
- AIR's will be granted access to Exhibitions Instagram Account @930KingStreet and will be encouraged to post frequently.
- Residents are encouraged to host weekly open work sessions (either in person, or broadcasting on Zoom or Instagram Live). Residents are encouraged to establish regular contact with MC students.
- Residents are expected to share their Studio Practice with MC students.
- Residents are at liberty to set their own schedules, though some student check- ins should take place during peak class hours: 9 am - 5 pm Monday -Friday Eastern Standard Time.
- Residents are expected to provide an artist talk as well as a workshop, demonstration, or interactive program. Past resident artist activities have included artist talks plus collaborative projects with students and demonstrations, workshops, and/or interactive installations. **To be clear, this is not an expectation for semester long academic teaching responsibilities.
- Residents could be considered for future exhibition opportunities by the exhibitions committee; if interested in future exhibition artist in residents will be expected to submit samples of their work along with detailed proposal and standard applications to the committee for review.
- Resident has the option of program our Open Gallery exhibition space through the duration of their residency. Art work installation in the Open Gallery will be conducted by the resident, with the support of department staff.
Artist Selection Criteria
The Exhibitions Committee will review the AIR proposals and make a recommendation to the Dean regarding the suitability of the artist for a virtual residency and the term. Residency proposals will be evaluated on the quality of work and the teaching, artistic, or community-oriented objectives outlined in the proposal. Artists will be required to submit a completed application, samples of their work, current resume, and statement of intent that outlines the scope and activities anticipated during their residency. Artists should specifically address how they plan to use virtual platforms to communicate and engage with our students.
Artist Qualifications
Artists should have a demonstrated professional body of work within their respective discipline and should be producing work on a current and consistent basis. Other relevant considerations might include experience in teaching, involvement in community-oriented or collaborative projects.
AIR Program Administration and Management
The AIR program will be managed by the Exhibitions Committee of the Department of Visual Arts and Design of the TP/SS Campus, which currently assumes responsibility for programming and managing all of the exhibition's spaces within the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Art Center and the Cultural Arts Center Gallery. AIR applications will be reviewed and approved by the committee. Individual residencies will be managed by the Exhibitions Committee Coordinator and one assigned committee member (the AIR Coordinator).
Funding/Remuneration
Selected resident artists may also be eligible for a stipend to fund the interactive activities of their residency, subject to available funding. Artists must be eligible to file a US W-9 Tax form to receive payment. International artists, and those unable to file a US W-9 Tax Form are still permitted to apply but may be ineligible to receive the stipend.
Use of CF Facilities and Equipment
Each resident artist is provided with a studio space in The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Arts Center. Studios range in size from 150 to 350 square feet and include a sink and access to the MC wi-fi network.
Use of facilities and equipment outside residents’ assigned studio spaces must be approved by the AIR Coordinator. Residents may be permitted with approval to use studio spaces and equipment in the Cafritz facility as long as their activities do not interfere with classes or other college activities. Residents will be responsible for their own materials, tools and equipment. MC tools and equipment may not be used or kept in AIR studios during the residency. AIRs are expected to adhere to all Montgomery College Health and Safety policies.
